Are Tom and Jerry Best Friends?

What is the new Top Gun movie like? A lot like the first Top Gun movie. And that is the highest compliment. Loud, brash, beautifully shot, and carrying a sense of timelessness—little to no CGI was used as in the original—the film is still a rite of passage story, except Maverick Tom Cruise is now one of the Navy's top aviators flying experimental planes, but sure enough, he quickly has to learn how to become a true leader to a crew of pilots as well as a father figure to Rooster Miles Teller the son of his dead wingman Goose Anthony Edwards.

In other words, middle-aged Maverick still has some growing up to do. Val Kilmer also makes a triumphant return to the big screen in his Iceman role. And you might cry when you see it. If you enjoyed the first, you will enjoy this one. It is Grade A, old school blockbuster red meat that has not graced the multiplex in quite some time. Esquire: I was surprised and delighted at how you went for nostalgia right off the bat—the opening moments, from the title card, to the aircraft carrier, to the music is straight out of the first movie.

Did you always plan to do that? Joseph Kosinski : It's such an iconic opening —the simplicity of it. I saw the first movie as a 12 year old kid in I wanted the audience to know that it's a Top Gun movie and that we, the people who are making this movie, love Top Gun as well. Opening on the carrier just grounds it in reality—it's just such a great way to kind of put you in the world of the Navy.

So it doesn't feel staged, you know? It feels very captured which is kind of the feel that I wanted the movie to have. Did you ever consider a new version? Kosinski: We talked about it. And I even talked to Kenny about doing a new version, but it's like a John Williams score, right? Danger Zone feels like it's from the Top Gun universe and I wanted the audience to be able to put this movie up after watching the first one and feel like you're in the same universe. ESQ: What kind of relationship did you have with the original film?

Kosinski: I was at the perfect age to see it. I was always into aviation, I built all those model airplanes as a kid with my dad and flew radio-controlled airplanes. And the Maverick story is of a boy, becoming a man.

Flying fast jets, falling in love with your teacher. It's got like all those boyhood fantasy elements to it. But, you know, as a visual kid, I loved it. The way that Tony Scott shot that movie was different than any blockbuster. You gotta remember, Jerry Bruckheimer hired him off the Hunger which is a very European looking art film and puts him in a big Hollywood studio movie and Tony basically redefines the genre. The look of the film stuck with me and that soundtrack was the soundtrack of that summer.

So it kind of exemplified the perfect summer blockbuster, right? And part of me was trying to capture some of that feeling with this film. ESQ: I know this project has been talked about forever.

How did you ultimately get Tom Cruise on board? Jerry Bruckheimer sent me an early version of a script they were working on. And I think we should do that in person. And in between setups, we had like a half hour. We met in a hotel room and I had a whole presentation.

First I pitched the Maverick-Rooster storyline as being the kind of emotional spine of the film. And then I pitched him the title. If you know anything about the film business you know how hard it is to get a movie made. And to see him do that with a phone call was pretty cool.

I learned later that Tom came into that meeting not really wanting to make the movie. But Jerry, as a smart producer, didn't tell me that until I had arrived in Paris. But luckily it all worked out. You also tap into a classic scene from the first movie: the shirtless beach volleyball scene. Did you feel as though it was mandatory to include an homage to that?

So I knew it was kind of a requirement and how disappointed people would be if it wasn't in there. So then the thing was like: How do we work it into our story? Because we're not just gonna do it for the sake of doing it. There's got to be a reason for Maverick to allow his pilots to do this.

So writer Ehren Kruger coined the term "dog fight football," offense and defense at the same time, which seemed like a great concept. Again it seemed like it turned it into a teachable moment, right? And so once we felt like it was there for a reason, we had fun with it. Those actors had that date on the calendar circled six months out as you can imagine. Originally, I conceived the scene as shirts versus skins. And I got there and I started dividing them up, you know, shirt, skin, shirt, skins.

And everyone who I told was a shirt started having emotional breakdowns. Please, please don't make me put on the t-shirt. Everyone's on the skins! Kosinski: Someone's gonna have to come up with them! Let's see if it actually catches on. We tried to apply it to scenes where it made some sense.

You know, obviously, as the film goes on the stakes get higher. And so, yes it definitely gets sweatier over time. There's some trick to getting the perfect sweat beads which is a little bit of oil and then a little water spray on top of it. We had to learn the tricks of that Top Gun aesthetic. But yeah, it was definitely a joke on set: Am I too sweaty?

Actors would ask me that all the time. But it takes a lot to show up on cameras too much. You could feel drenched but the camera doesn't see it. ESQ: Another new observation about the first film: I was kind of surprised how my perception of Iceman had changed. Maverick is kind of the dick. Kosinski: So it is kind of funny that on reflection a lot of us had the same reaction going back: Wait Iceman's right? Which is why Iceman in our film is the one who advanced through the Navy ranks and is now commander of the Pacific fleet.

He won Top Gun. He was a great pilot. He is a great leader. He's not the villain, you know? And so I love the fact that he and Maverick, obviously they have that reconciliation at the end of the first film, but that has turned into a real long-lasting friendship by the time you meet them in our film. ESQ: If you knew what Val Kilmer has gone through health-wise over the past few years, you kind of get chills when you see his name appear in the opening credits.

But we knew that Val had been through some really challenging times with his health. So we had a meeting with Val came and I don't think Jerry had seen him and a long time. And it was Val who is like: Iceman has to be part of this story.

And it was Val who came up with the idea of how to integrate his character into our film in a very authentic way, in a way that he could play the role more authentically to who he is now as opposed to having to try to be something. And they haven't been on screen together since the first Top Gun. You can just feel the mutual respect and love because they had that experience together in '86 before either of them were superstars.

Val told me that being on set for the first Top Gun he knew he knew what happening. Like when he saw Tom playing Maverick, he saw Tom becoming a superstar in front of his eyes. Mainly because I always saw Don Draper as the Maverick of the advertising world. Did you have that in mind when you were casting? So it's very hard to find another actor that feels like they have authoritative pressure when you're dealing with a massive movie star.

Jon just really feels like they could be an Admiral in the Navy. But in real life, couldn't be a nicer guy, right? He has that old school classic movie star persona. And he did such a great job, kind of slipping into that role. Over-amped maleness was very acceptable during that time. Maybe a little bit less.

Produced in part by long time Simpsons producer James L. The film received generally favorable reviews from critics, who praised its performances and screenplay.

‘Tom and Jerry’ attempts to cash in on nostalgia and fails

In this world, Tom and Jerry are absolutely necessary. From Warner Animation Group and directed by Tim Story comes an animated cat, an animated mouse, and a whole lot of live action shenanigans. We live in interesting times…. But before we dive into the profound questions about what this movie means for society today or perhaps its commentary on upscale hotel practices, we must answer a much more foundational question…. KL: The best description I have of this film is that it is the exact movie I would watch in a backseat dvd player in a rental car on the way to visit my grandma as a child. AB: Despite being located in the middle of New York City, you are absolutely right about the minivan aesthetic here Kenneth. The slapstick humor of a cat and mouse going to extreme lengths to cause mischief does have a time limit, and perhaps minutes exceeded that by quite a bit.

“Tom & Jerry” will make you wish for animated death

Kate Erbland. What could top that? IndieWire: Joe, thank you so much for taking the time, but why are you not on a yacht popping champagne and celebrating with your family?
