Shamans in this story have trained for years in their own culturally-based traditional practices to prepare for The Shaman Fight, a sacred tournament that occurs every years. The Shaman Fight, as opposed to any other sort of tournament, is more of a mental, spiritual battle and thusly, competitors must choose carefully what spirit they will team up with.
Through the series, a plethora of shamans and their respective spirit partners are shown and while the ghosts usually have fully fleshed out personalities of their own, they almost always are ones that combine or contrast with their host in entertaining ways.
For readers who had been following the development of the pair, this visual payoff works perfectly with the narrative of the story.
