Blood runs cold
Winona, a successful artist looking to get away from her stressful life. Her manager rents her a house in her home town where she runs in to an old boyfriend. They go back to the house, only to find out it is not as empty as they assumed.

Because this is basically the slasher version of that: a Scandinavian take on Western genre tropes that subsides on delightful accents and falls apart when it becomes a mindless imitation of our garbage. No offense intended to anyone that likes Duskwood babs, don't read this review! A Swedish slasher film which I suppose beneath the surface this is fairly generic with it's masked killer stalking the inhabitants of a remote large cabin in the woods but i really like it.
It's competently acted by it's youthful unknown cast and the harsh wintry setting gives the film a great atmosphere. For a feature debut it's an accomplished work from director Sonny Laguna. It's not rushed and the direction is assured. The characters are given time to breathe and when they aren't breathing it's because they've come to a gruesome demise all practical effects courtesy of a cool looking masked figure. From the co-director of Swedish Evil Dead aka Wither, comes this underwhelming horror flick.
As far as low-budget winter slashers go, Cold Prey this is not. Blood Runs Cold is painfully sluggish despite a sub runtime, has nothing characters who are either bland or horny or both, and can barely muster an ounce of suspense from its perplexing yet incredibly rote killer. Low budget gore and nudity - but no keeper. Some nice build up of atmosphere and a couple of decent kills they didn't skimp on the blood no matter what this movie cost , but in the end when we get to the final girl, things just go a little silly and repetitive.
I also don't seem to recall why the heck the killer is so hard to kill. I think he's a snow zombie!! Actually snow mummy because he does seem to be quite dusty when people stab him. Anyway I love that this takes place in the winter time. I felt pretty damn cold throughout this movie and snow shows blood really well. Such a fucking blank slate of a slasher villain that they might as well have made it into a stick figure. Also their excessive use of dutch angles and shakycam didn't exactly enhance the pointless letterboxing.
A very impressive little film that has some issues such as killing off the cast way to fast and the weapon she pulls out of nowhere to end the film.
But it has some wicked effects and I absolutely loved the look of the killer! Very bad low budget slasher. Almost no backstory, terrible lines spoken in English by non English actors.
No tension at all, but some decent gore. Winona is a singer who is headed out to a secluded country house to spend a little down time. Once there, she hooks up with an old boyfriend, and invites him and his friends back to the house. However, she doesn't count on a creepy, possibly inhuman cannibal guy with an axe who starts coming after her and her friends.
Sadly, this isn't a very good film. It looks really good for the five grand it cost to make, but the plot is paper thin, the acting is pretty bad, and the only thing that makes it somewhat worthwhile is the…. So for one thing, the acting is atrocious. I can look past that normally as many of my favourite films have an amateurish level of performance, but here it just serves as another unpalatable ingredient to go with the non-story and lack of atmosphere.
There are also more than its fair share of one character doing inexplicable things. So generic. What it does do fairly well for the budget is have some decent gore and the killer looks kind of creepy. He isn't utilized well though, sadly. Umm, this one just failed to keep my attention. However, the story is just too dry for me.
Nothing new here. This is particularly shocking given the gorgeous look of the film, the cinematography, sound, score, and solid acting. The only reason I'm not rating it higher is because director Sonny Laguna and his writing partners could have stepped up their game with the script. I didn't mind the simplicity of the plot. It is a slasher film and I really don't want much outside of the trusted formula.
I do like to see some experimenting with the genre but it's not required always. I absolutely loved the lead actress, Hannah Oldenburg. She plays Winona, a musician seeking a little peace and quiet at a cabin in…. Genre horror. We never know who or what the killer is, he's certainly different to most as he doesn't…. Film 9 for my october horrorthon. Very little to recommend in this Swedish slasher. And that's your lot. I appreciate a good slasher. Expected more! Upgrade to remove ads.
