Cuphead splits me right down the middle. It's a run-and-gun game about one-on-one fights, which means it's about learning attack patterns, dodging enemies, and striking back through multiple waves to eventually destroy them. It's inspired by the likes of Contra and Mega Man, games which aren't really my thing. It's also using hand-drawn cel animation, watercolour backgrounds and live jazz recordings to mimic the style of early, s cartoons. In its videos, it looks like a controllable, early Mickey Mouse cartoon with a lot more fighting. It's exactly my kind of thing.

Attack of the 30's Characters, as the liner notes indicate, is something of a "sampler" collection. No less than 8 separate studios are represented by the 16 shorts included here. In addition to the heavyweights like Warners and Disney, equal time and equal admiration is given to lesser-known studios like Van Beuren and Terrytoons.

Supplemental materials include a few still photo galleries of promotional material, plus a well-written and very informative booklet.

If there's a flaw to this collection, it's not exactly the fault of Thunderbean. In the 6 years as of this writing since this disc was released, several of the cartoons that were in the public domain at the time have seen "official" releases. Which means that, as good as most of the prints used here are, even cleaner ones have been offered by WB, Disney, Image and even Thunderbean itself. The color cartoons tend to suffer some minor saturation problems, although they are still quite acceptable.

Having seen most of the company's other DVD's, I do believe they did they best they could with the material. Only about 4 or 5 of the cartoons played. Then the dvd rapidly skipped over the rest of them, showing only the titles.

Obviously, a third rate bootleg copy. Also, why does Amazon prevent customers from seeing other negative reviews? No, animation was not ALL from Disney. There were scores of other great animators, most particularly the Fleischer brothers, who over several decades created a body of work which can still amaze and delight the viewer.

Even the Harman-Ising animal musicals are brilliant, even wild. There is here a Tom and Jerry that are human -- and not cat and mouse -- and they don't chase each other. It does not matter than many of these cartoons are in black and white: The inventiveness is still there, and perhaps,in even greater profusion.

One person found this helpful. This is a nice compilation, but for Thunderbean, the transfers should've been much better. I mean if you have a standard TV, it might be alright. But these transfers don't pop my eye out at all. None of them really do. Except for some, which in fact, probably only one. Most of them look like they were transferred from VHS tapes, rather than directly from film. I'm sorry, but I don't know who would find this a very pristine release. I really don't.

So if you want better releases, go to the later releases from Thunderbean. They are the ones that look very good.

If you thought the cartoons from the '90s and aughts were twisted and creepy, just wait until you see the freaky, weird cartoons that came out of the first half of the s. Some of these "children's" cartoons would pair nicely with the next season of American Horror Story and are effective in making your skin crawl. You'll see everything from surreal, sometimes even trippy sequences of cute little characters' descents into hell, whimsical animal cruelty, and, in two instances, really eerie, herky-jerky puppet animation - not to mention crackly and canny audio that would fit right in on a horror movie soundtrack. Cuphead: creating a game that looks like a 1930s cartoon

As I recently wrote here at Paste , my favorite memories of childhood are of watching old cartoons from the golden era of animation. Imagine my delight, then, when I first laid eyes on Cuphead. Here are ten films to watch if you want to relive the look and feel of Cuphead. Bimbo would later star in other Fleischer Studios films as well, as the boyfriend of Betty Boop, who also appears in this short and played a major role in developing the aesthetic of Cuphead. He was later phased out as the Hayes Code, a law that imposed morality standards on the production of entertainment, was enacted, as the idea of a dog dating a human woman was frowned upon. Another Fleischer Studios hit was the Popeye series of cartoons, which started when E. While the racial sensibilities of the latter two are wildly outdated, they probably served as at least partial inspiration for Cuphead segments like Djimmi the Great. I admire the amount of subtlety in the characters in A Waif's Welcome above. The father is scared of his wife, but agrees to make her happy by taking in the orphan. The mother dotes on her child, but shows real compassion taking in the orphan. Just a few years earlier, Van Beuren Studios were producing shorts like Candy Town Silvery Moon re-release above , much less focused but charmingly creative. Apparently, the moon is not made of green cheese, but candy!

Why the 30s specifically? By contrast, the peak years of the so-called Golden Age are packed with quality. Even the worst American cartoons of the 30s and 40s can have a shot of ingenuity in them, and the mediocre ones put almost all of modern American commercial animation to shame.
