By Mark Schilling. Japan Correspondent. And his film is the only one from Japan in the lineup. And Kitano Takeshi won its biggest prize. Also, he wanted to show how the people and events of the past can become forgotten by history. There was a lot of energy in that era. It was something like the energy when rhythm and blues gave way to the Beatles and other rock musicians.

People found it surprising, but interesting. But I just want audiences to feel something for these two young guys who overcome their disabilities, to know that they existed. He believes that, with the growing popularity of anime worldwide, the gap that might have once existed between Japanese and foreign tastes have narrowed considerably. But problems also exist, he notes, such as the pressure to switch from the 2D style he has long favored to full 3DCG. Home Film Global. Sep 7, am PT.

World acclaimed anime director, Masaaki Yuasa will be making a guest appearance at this year's Sydney Film Festival, to talk about his latest work, where Japan's 14th Century noh-performer meets modern day rock concert. Based on a novel, Tales of the Heike: Chapter of Inu-Oh , by Hideo Furukawa, Yuasa cleverly fuses together the real-life story of Inu-Oh, a celebrated performer at his time, and modern day rock concert, like never seen before. The director reveals that he became fascinated by the main characters, who despite living during a chaotic and difficult time, pursued honestly, what they wanted to do. As Yuasa invested into the characters of Inu-Oh and Tomona, he gradually became inspired- "I wish I could be like them". For the director, it was a priority to portray "a person of honest expression" , such that the production team worked tirelessly together to create a character that was as close to the actor as possible. The film which is hailed as a "rock opera", is driven by music, but unlike a typical musical where the story is created around the piece, the music was produced simultaneously with the story and the characters.

Masaaki Yuasa is an anime television and film director, screenwriter, storyboard artist and animator known for his wild free form style.

A Brief Introduction To The Unconventional Masaaki Yuasa

By Kambole Campbell. A fascinating voice in Japanese animation, cult favourite Masaaki Yuasa is known for his ever-shifting visual style and experimentation. Having worked in television animation since the s, his work drew exponential international attention following his co-founding of the studio Science SARU with the current head Eunyoung Choi. The only images approaching realism are his occasional, experimental interpolation of real photography in his backgrounds. A psychedelic display of his cartoonish, freeform style, Mind Game follows its protagonist from low-key beginnings at a bar all the way into the belly of a whale, where the director unspools the psychology of his characters through eclectic imagery that breaks from a common preconception of what anime looks like. Beyond the comedy though, it has moments of transcendent sensuality and beauty, such as a sex scene presented as a very literal metamorphosis. The lovers simultaneously transform with and into one another in a manner that is as sensuous and expressive as it is strange. The central trio of girls all realise their disparate interests through their creation of animation together, exploring their idealised world through that art.

His two new films find the director, now something of a mentor figure in the world of animation, having opened his own studio, Science Saru, in , and ready to revisit some of his thematic and formal ideas. Lu Over the Wall sees Yuasa return to flash animation, a technique he had first used extensively in Ping Pong: The Animation , while The Night is Short, Walk on Girl marks a return to the visual style of The Tatami Galaxy , which is appropriate, since both are adaptations of the work of Tomihiko Morimi. Lu is less relentless in its pacing than some of his other films, preferring to ease in to what is perhaps his most realistic setting as much as this adjective makes sense when dealing with mermaids and sea kings since Ping Pong. Lu Over the Wall.

Animation Director Masaaki Yuasa Takes Us Inside His Flamboyantly Surreal Worlds

Highly original and completely insane animation masterpiece. Mind Game was Yuasa's first film and foreshadowed his rising talent, though it took me a second viewing to fully appreciate this film. It's hard to describe just what exactly it is, but boring it is not. Not for everyone, but definitely worth finding out for yourself. The best thing about this anthology is that you really can't do justice to the visual beauty with simple screen caps. Yuasa's ode to Hayao Miyazaki.
