Why do classic cartoon characters age so badly? Just like Bugs and Daffy in Space Jam , these great characters have gone from being funny animals to annoying caricatures with bad one-liners. After all, the original Rocky and Bullwinkle series had a wit that rarely insulted its audience. Unfortunately, this high-tech update falls flat after the first half-hour. The plot revolves around the duo's arch foes Fearless Leader De Niro , Boris Alexander , and Natasha Russo , who have escaped from the cartoon realm and entered the real world. Aided by the very obnoxious Karen Sympathy Perabo , they embark on a trek around the country.

They get paid a large amount of money to have fun, while I get paid a very small amount of money to not really enjoy myself. The old TV show was constructed so that Rocky and Bullwinkle episodes were broken up with other, often completely unrelated material. There are some clever bits. The basic premise of cancelled, out-of-work cartoon characters living off dwindling residual checks is solid.
All this might have worked better with another director. On what basis? What kind of basis is that? Moose and squirrel are back: bad news for no-goodniks everywhere, great news for laughter-deprived movie audiences. Yes, that All-American flying rodent and his dim-witted companion are back in business, once again seeking to foil the evil machinations of the fiendishly fiendish Boris Badenov, his sultry companion, Natasha Fatale, and the relentlessly rotten Fearless Leader. Fans of the animated duo's TV series, which elevated punning to heights unseen since the prime of the Marx Brothers and mocked the Cold War with merciless abandon, have double cause to rejoice. Rocky and Bullwinkle have not only returned, but they've been placed in the hands of filmmakers who know what they're doing. The result is even rarer than a talking moose and squirrel - a big-screen adaptation of a small-screen pleasure that captures the spirit of its source.
Jason Alexander: Boris
One of the best of the live action adaptations of old cartoons right up there with the first "George of the Jungle" movie which manages to retain a lot of the sly satirical humour of the original show. I guess some jokes just didn't translate so they've obviously made up their own don't worry, unlike far too many discs out there this one comes with English subtitles! Anyway, if you're a fan of the original series or are just in the mood for something silly, give this one a shot. Great for christmas gifts to Rockyites. This is by far the best of the Rocky and Bullwinkle movies.

In their natural pen and paint environment, Rocky and Bullwinkle shine. But they seem as dull as dishwater, and completely out of place, in a live action world. Hence, their Adventures never connect with viewers. Rocky and Bullwinkle's CGI effects recall its antecedent Who Framed Roger Rabbit, and like that film its dialogue is packed with cultural references that will have adults laughing harder than the kids.
