A scene in which Tom tries to reach Jerry across a power line hints at what this movie could have been if it had trusted its silent characters in, say, the manner that Aardman trusts fans of Shaun the Sheep.
While Moretz throws herself into the bad material and tries to make the best of it, everything falls flat around her. I get it. But then why are we spending so much time with them? And why are the references so stunningly dated? I don't blame them. And the truth is that this market is crowded right now. And even on HBO Max, where most people will watch this movie, there are dozens of titles, including almost all of the Studio Ghibli catalog.

And so, the cat-and-mouse game is on, as Tom and Jerry let their paws and claws loose in the fancy-schmancy hotel. It helps that the cast seem to be enjoying themselves and deliver relatively good performances. The voice cast is fine, too, if not slightly underwhelming. Filmmaker Tim Story is a pro at making these sorts of light entertainers and steers Tom and Jerry in precisely the right direction. Tom and Jerry is released through Warner Bros.
