Wolfwalkers takes the myth and legend everyone knows surrounding werewolves, and transports it to a stunning 2D hand-drawn animated version of Kilkenny in 's Ireland, during the Cromwellian occupation of the country, and a dark time for Irish Catholics. At its heart it's a story about the unlikely friendship between Robyn, an English immigrant to Ireland and daughter of the new local wolf hunter and Mebh, a Wolfwalker who lives in the forest with her mother and a pack of wild wolves, set against a backdrop of tyranny, oppression and fear. The final part of their Irish Folklore Trilogy is, to put it simply, a stunning piece of animation innovation. Cartoon Saloon are a force to be reckoned with. Everything about this movie is incredible, from the animation, the story and the stellar voice cast.

The vivid, saturated color palette and thick Irish brogues may be the same. The heart, action and sophistication of the artwork make this folk tale the best animated film of the year. An English hunter voiced by Sean Bean and his daughter Honor Kneafsey have come to Kilkenny so that he can rid the nearby forest of wolves so that it can be cleared and the land worked for profit. Young Robyn longs to help her Dad, and even has her own falcon and crossbow for the job. He sets his traps and snares alone. But when Robyn slips away to the woods to spite Dad, she has an accident.

But everything changes when the young apprentice befriends a free-spirited girl—Mebh Eva Whittaker —from a mysterious tribe rumoured to transform into wolves by night. As the two girls search for Mebh's missing mother, Robyn uncovers a secret that draws her into the world of "wolfwalkers" and she risks turning into the very creature her father is on a quest to destroy. And for the third and final chapter, Moore along with co-director Ross Stewart, and writer Will Collins who also wrote Song of the Sea brings in the myriad themes from his previous ventures, about parenting and man's relation to nature, and marries them with new ideas that are a lot more political than before. And of course, it's still got fantastical elements in this case, humans who can control wolves. Wolfwalkers then is a movie that works equally well for children the primary target audience and their parents who'll be sitting alongside them. Watch on.
