‘Tom and Jerry’ Review: Classic Cartoon Gets an Adaptation That Doesn’t Belong in Any Generation
Alexia Castellon , Entertainment Editor March 11, Jerry moves into the hotel and the manager is determined to get rid of him. However, new watchers might not get such a thrill out of it. If you were not a Tom and Jerry fan before, this movie might seem a little too plain for you.
Despite that, it was still nice to see the duo on the screen once again. It has not received very good reviews by critics because of that.
Even though the critics disagree, I still believe it is a family-friendly movie worth watching. Whether you decide to watch it with friends or family, the movie is now available in theaters and will be streamed for free on HBO Max for 31 days from its theatrical release.

“Tom & Jerry: Blast off to Mars” (2005) Review
Sign In. Hide Spoilers. If the studio had spent as much money on story development and animation as it did for the "bot reviews", this motion picture could have been at least an "8". Off the top of my head, I can think of four different scenarios that would be faithful to the original cartoons and still make it relevant. And I'm not even WGA.

I'm honestly quite glad I was never much of a fan of Tom and Jerry, the cat-and-mouse slapstick cartoon series started by William Hanna and Joseph Barbera in Because if I was, I can only imagine how much more disgusted I would be by what has happened to the characters and the franchise since Warner Bros. Not least that I can unblinkingly use the word "franchise" to discuss them. Yes, with an ampersand in place of the word "and", which isn't really all that big a violation of the series' norms, in the grand scheme of things, barely enough enough to make the corner of my eye twitch uncontrollably. But it's still kind of symptomatic of the problem here, which is that this never feels like it was made by people who, like, cared. And it ends up being pretty fucking horrible, even at the task of being a mindlessly pleasurable consumer good.

More than 80 years have passed since housecat Tom started chasing rascally mouse Jerry in a series of cartoon shorts for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. Television series and feature films followed, including this latest comedy, a blend of live action and computer-generated animation. Happily, director Tim Story and screenwriter Kevin Costello have retained the manic tone of the original outings, with lots of slapstick humor and benign mayhem. As the film opens in present-day Manhattan, our duo is down and out, seeking a new home. Meanwhile, Kayla Chloe Grace Moretz talks herself into a job as an event planner at the Royal Gate, posing as a more qualified candidate.
'Tom and Jerry' (2021) Review
PG: Cartoon violence, rude humor, and brief language. Production Companies: Warner Animation Group. Jerry moves into New York City's finest hotel on the eve of the wedding of the century, forcing the desperate event planner to hire Tom to get rid of him. As mayhem ensues, the escalating cat-and-mouse battle soon threatens to destroy her career, the wedding, and possibly the hotel itself. The iconic rivalry between Tom and Jerry has charmed audiences for generations. Some might argue that they were the pioneers of slapstick comedy and violence in animation.

Dir: Tim Story. PG cert, mins. Cat chases mouse. Mouse clubs cat with a mallet. Tom and Jerry, then, are mere accessories to this pedestrian tale of professional fraudulence. Jerry comes off as, well, a bit of an asshole.

Tom, Jerry, and various other creatures are rounded out enough to pass for vaguely three-dimensional creations, but they have the same appealing design simplicity as the 2D animation of yore.

There was something very innocuous about cartoon specials that even made what could be deemed as uber-violence but never fatal between two permanent frenemies into a persistently amusing fun-time. Which is why Tim Story's live-action movie based on our favourite squabbling cat-n-mouse duo can be seen as a reboot to our childhood days. Only that it partly works that way. Tom and Jerry, now rendered homeless, make their way to the Big Apple. While Jerry manages to sneak his way into a plushy stay in the hotel, Tom is left to fend for himself in the street.
