A decade ago, a tragic shipwreck separated Fena Houtman from her childhood friend Yukimaru and took her father's life. Now, at age 23, she is trapped on an island and is doomed to spend the rest of her life selling herself to men. On the night she is to be forcibly wed to a client, Fena hatches a plan to escape from her employers, but two old acquaintances unexpectedly intervene and help her run away. The three make haste for the open sea and land upon Goblin Island—a mysterious place that a clan of fierce warriors call home.
It is there that Fena learns that her father's ill-fated final journey at sea was in search of a place called "Eden," the location of something important that he had to protect.
With nothing but a clear crystal as a clue, Fena is tasked with finding this place, as she is the only person who can do so. While still contemplating the search for what her father left behind, Fena reunites with Yukimaru, who encourages her to take up the quest. Now the captain of a seven-person crew, Fena must navigate the high seas in search of Eden.

From what I could gather from the promo material, a tragedy results in a kid Fena growing up all alone on an island. Apparantly, her journey will unlock the answers behind how she became an orphan in the first place.

Warning: this post contains details Episode 12 of the anime Fena: Pirate Princess. Fena comes from a list of maidens whose lives are ruled by the likes of Cody and Franz, symbols of Eden. All of this is a test to see if Fena has what it takes to become a chosen maiden who will decide the fate of the universe. Everything that happened, since before Fena was born, all led to this moment to make a single choice. The first is that Fena can choose to leave the world to continue as it is, and it will be destroyed in the future. The vision changed and the Samurai Seven rushed into battle and was killed to her horror. The second is destruction and rebirth — Fena can choose to let the world be destroyed now and from its ashes a new world will be created.

Episode 3 of Fena: Pirate Princess is as impressive as the premiere, if not more so, as it goes about fleshing out more of the Samurai Seven -- in particular, the twins Enju and Kaede -- while Fena also gets an important clue that may lead her to get closer to Eden. The animation here is top-notch as always, with this episode showcasing more action sequences between the Samurai Seven and another pirate crew they encounter. The crew's pirate ship-submarine, the Bonito II , nears Bar-Baral, a free city that many pirates use as a docking point, to replenish their supplies and allow Fena to purchase more practical clothes than her long gown. First, though, they have to decide who's going to guard the ship while everyone is out.
During a blazing high seas battle, a young girl named Fena is pushed out to sea in a rowboat, instructed to stay alive until her protectors can find her again. Just when it seems her scheme has fallen through, some figures from her past reappear, and Fena finds herself swept up in a whole new daring adventure. There is an unmistakable glamor to them or, at least, the version of them that has filtered down to us through Hollywood and adventure stories. I found myself entranced by the idea of a seafaring heroine and the intriguing mix of aesthetics and fantastical elements. The question is, how does the first episode hold up?
