FOREWORD: Alright, since this is broken into four parts, I'll lead off by re-iterating: this project is an "answer" of sorts to a generally terrific list of essential anime films by Paste Magazine. You can read my reasoning for compiling this selection in Part 1 of this particular list, or check out Part 2 and Part 3. In a comment on this project, a reader remarked that many of the movies on my list seemed to be from the 80s, or thereabouts. I love obsessing over data, so I counted up both how my list stacks up, in terms of when the films were made… and the Paste list too, obviously. What I found out was illuminating. The Paste list neglects the 70s and before, including only 7 films from that stretch. There are 14 recent movies from the s, but the s are the clear winner, racking up 34 entries.

The set-up is relatively simple: Mitsuha Mone Kamishiraishi is a high school-age girl who lives in the fictional Itomori, a gorgeous, quaint village in the Hida region of Japan; Taki Ryunosuke Kamiki is a slightly older boy living in Tokyo. They are both average kids with their own social circles, but they have no actual connection, and lead very different lives, at least partially defined by their equally gorgeous settings of city vs. One day, Taki wakes up and looks down to see breasts. The next day, Mitsuha wakes up back in her own form but with only vague memories of the day before. And, of course, the same thing happens in reverse. For example, Mitsuha has the courage to talk to the girl Taki likes, serving as a sort of body-switching Cyrano de Bergerac. Shinkai and his team have both an eye for detail and a poetic vision.
