Xenogears was originally released by Squaresoft now Square-Enix. The series' creator, Tetsuya Takahashi , left Squaresoft in along with his group of game designers. Using funds from Namco , they started Monolith Soft. Because Squaresoft continues to hold the copyright for Xenogears , they could not continue the Xenogears project as Takahashi intended; instead, Takahashi completely reworked the Xenogears story into what became the story for Xenosaga , leading many fans to believe that Xenogears will be re-written and re-released sometime in the future.

Developer Monolith Soft, consisting of Xenogears director Tetsuya Takahashi and other ex-Square employees, has promised us a full six-episode series, given that the early installments sell well. Rather, the team is following an altered, partially re-written version of this timeline for the Xenosaga series. Thus, there is no direct relation between the two games. An even more important thing to keep in mind, because of this, is to look at Xenosaga Episode I as its own game, and the beginning of a new series, rather than as a distant prequel to Xenogears.
