I enjoyed Blue Exorcist, but it took me a while to work out what was going on in the season and a little while to forgive it for that. The Kyoto Saga is set mid-way through season 1. If you stop the first series at around episode 16 or 17, then you can watch this chunk of the series. In summary, Rin Okumura is an exorcist with a vast and dark secret. How huge? After nearly 6 years of waiting, Blue Exorcist returned with a new anime season covering the popular Kyoto Saga arc of the manga. Unlike the second half of the first season of the anime, Kyoto Saga follows the source material.

Sure, there are some outliers, but Blue Exorcist is in rare company. Fans of the manga will be familiar with its source material, the Kyoto Impure King arc, but anime-only viewers might find themselves a little confused as the first episode begins. Outside of the more faithful adherence to the manga, though, this A-1 Pictures production is as solid as ever. There are new staff members running the ship, and a lot has happened in the anime industry in the past six years, but these brothers still know how to light up the screen.
