Mindful of the environmental concerns about lanterns, the film-makers wisely ignore that part of festivities and embellish the legend of a lovesick moon goddess with a musical soundtrack that warmly embraces self-empowerment and self-reflection including a rousing K-pop anthem entitled Ultraluminary. The quality of the animation is impressive, notably the expressiveness of the adolescent heroine, whose anguish is achingly evident in her furrowed brow and widening eyes. The new Netflix film Over the Moon features all the obligatory elements of a modern animated feature. It focuses on a spirited young heroine enduring familial hardships, a smattering of pop songs that are fine enough in the moment but evaporate from the mind seconds later, and a squishy bright-green alien thingy voiced by Ken Jeong in a fit of Olaf-goes-outer-space comedic relief. But Over the Moon is far more interesting than its animated contemporaries, if only for the parsing of its backstory. Produced by the Chinese-American outfit Pearl Studio in partnership with Netflix, the film represents a fascinating attempt to appeal to young audiences on both sides of the Pacific. Taking place in an unnamed modern-day Chinese village, Over the Moon follows a year-old girl named Fei Fei Cathy Ang who dearly misses her beloved, deceased mother. Just as her mooncake-baking father John Cho begins to romance a new woman Sandra Oh , who arrives on the scene complete with her own annoying little son Robert G. Fei Fei and her little brother travel to the moon, where they meet lunar goddess Chang'e.

When young Fei Fei discovers that her dad has fallen in love with someone new, she surmises that he's probably forgotten about her late mother. To remind him, she sets on a mission to prove that the goddess Chang'e, who her mother constantly told stories about when she was a kid, is real. To do that, she has to go where the goddess lives: the moon. Netflix's new animated film is filled with songs, an emotional story, a stellar Asian cast and is a wonderful representation of Chinese culture. Guru spoke to the film's director, Glen Keane, a Disney legend who has worked as an animator for several classic Disney films, as well as the film's stars: Cathy Ang who plays Fei Fei and Phillipa Soo who plays Chang'e, to talk about the movie.

Ever since I first saw the trailer for Over the Moon , I wanted to watch it. It looked so bright, colorful, interesting, and emotional. And it was nice to see that it was also going to take advantage of the opportunity to use Chinese culture rather than just having it act as a backdrop. But my experience with Netflix original animated films made me a little hesitant. And unfortunately, this movie was not an exception. The movie focuses on a young Chinese girl named Fei Fei.

Fei Fei Cathy Ang is a bright, resourceful girl determined to go to the moon. She is out to prove to her family that the tales her late mother told of a moon goddess awaiting the return of her true love are real. Her days are full, helping her parents sing about baking and selling moon cakes at a busy downtown marketplace.
