Moon cartoon 2020

Dedicated to the memory of scriptwriter Audrey Wells, who died of cancer in , Over The Moon teaches heavy-handed lessons about embracing the future through the eyes of a teenager, who refuses to accept that anyone could replace her late mother. Keane and Kahrs' film is immersed in Chinese culture, specifically the Mid-Autumn Festival when families come together in joyful celebration, devour calorific mooncakes and release sky lanterns. Mindful of the environmental concerns about lanterns, the film-makers wisely ignore that part of festivities and embellish the legend of a lovesick moon goddess with a musical soundtrack that warmly embraces self-empowerment and self-reflection including a rousing K-pop anthem entitled Ultraluminary. The quality of the animation is impressive, notably the expressiveness of the adolescent heroine, whose anguish is achingly evident in her furrowed brow and widening eyes. According to the myth, Chang'e resides on the moon with her companion, Jade Rabbit, and her tears are the stardust that twinkles in the night sky.

Over the Moon review – Netflix family animation is more Disney than Disney

This article was published more than 1 year ago. Some information may no longer be current. Over the Moon follows the journey of Fei Fei, left, who dearly misses her beloved, deceased mother. The new Netflix film Over the Moon features all the obligatory elements of a modern animated feature. It focuses on a spirited young heroine enduring familial hardships, a smattering of pop songs that are fine enough in the moment but evaporate from the mind seconds later, and a squishy bright-green alien thingy voiced by Ken Jeong in a fit of Olaf-goes-outer-space comedic relief. But Over the Moon is far more interesting than its animated contemporaries, if only for the parsing of its backstory. Produced by the Chinese-American outfit Pearl Studio in partnership with Netflix, the film represents a fascinating attempt to appeal to young audiences on both sides of the Pacific. Taking place in an unnamed modern-day Chinese village, Over the Moon follows a year-old girl named Fei Fei Cathy Ang who dearly misses her beloved, deceased mother. Just as her mooncake-baking father John Cho begins to romance a new woman Sandra Oh , who arrives on the scene complete with her own annoying little son Robert G. Fei Fei and her little brother travel to the moon, where they meet lunar goddess Chang'e.

When young Fei Fei discovers that her dad has fallen in love with someone new, she surmises that he's probably forgotten about her late mother. To remind him, she sets on a mission to prove that the goddess Chang'e, who her mother constantly told stories about when she was a kid, is real. To do that, she has to go where the goddess lives: the moon. Netflix's new animated film is filled with songs, an emotional story, a stellar Asian cast and is a wonderful representation of Chinese culture. Guru spoke to the film's director, Glen Keane, a Disney legend who has worked as an animator for several classic Disney films, as well as the film's stars: Cathy Ang who plays Fei Fei and Phillipa Soo who plays Chang'e, to talk about the movie.

We had the live-action remake Mulan , which took a Disney animated film featuring Asian characters and put Asian leads in the forefront.

Animation Legend Glen Keane Is ‘Over the Moon’ About His First Feature Directing Project

Ever since I first saw the trailer for Over the Moon , I wanted to watch it. It looked so bright, colorful, interesting, and emotional. And it was nice to see that it was also going to take advantage of the opportunity to use Chinese culture rather than just having it act as a backdrop. But my experience with Netflix original animated films made me a little hesitant. And unfortunately, this movie was not an exception. The movie focuses on a young Chinese girl named Fei Fei.

‘Over The Moon’ Underwhelms

Animated movies for children walk a tricky tightrope between imparting sobering life lessons about coping with loss and confronting societal evils, without also extinguishing all of the magic that guides a child through the world. Even if she could not be with her beloved on Earth, she would still be as close as possible, looking down on him. Four years later, the grief is no less sharp for preteen Fei Fei, who projects onto her widower father the role of Houyi. But when the Mid-Autumn Festival comes around and Father looks to be moving on with a new family in the kind Mrs. Chiu , Fei Fei fears that he has forgotten her mother altogether. Fueled by anger and an unwavering belief in the existence of the lunar goddess a mere , miles away, Fei Fei bargains with her sorrow by building a rocket and launching it at the moon. Sony Pictures Imageworks the company behind Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse deftly balances the magical with the scientific, the complex with the simple, in animating this movie that can best be described as a space fantasy.

The film is also a tribute to screenwriter Audrey Wells, who recently passed away after a battle with cancer. Perhaps it's fitting that "Over the Moon" gives a voice to the emotional struggles of a young girl, Fei Fei Cathy Ang , who is plunged into mourning when she loses her mother.
