This obsession with the natural world would ultimately culminate in this summer's The Lion King remake now available on home video , which uncannily brought the African Sahara to life using cutting-edge digital technology. Even Simba's latest coronation, however, bears the influence of the founder's obsession with wildlife. When Walt Disney was mounting his fifth animated feature, Bambi , he insisted the animators actually study animals.
‘Zootopia:’ Disney’s Latest and Greatest Animal Kingdom
Recently my wife and I took a vacation to Disneyworld. As iconic as the Disney parks are, and as much as we think we know about what we will see and do, we still left the parks wishing we had watched many different movies and shows before our trip to really help us feel that full immersion experience. Not sure what to prioritize? Don't worry, that's what you have me for.
The feature was finally greenlit after a collaborator suggested that motion capture be used for the whole production. Debbouze was initially hired just to voice the lead character. They tried to catch him up on the animatic afterward, but he was unable to focus on it. But when it came to the mocap shoot, Debbouze directed with great energy — too much, if anything. Nobody seemed to agree on how the animated characters should look. According to another, each character went through designs, but not to the extent of a keyframed animated feature, as the facial expressions and body language were determined by the mocapped actors.
First of all, the strange animation is no less than but unsettling. The characters, dubbed to be our early ape ancestors, are practically human with their mixed facial features but some are further developed than others making it confusing as to whether they are all the same species. But the problems keep coming. Perhaps most damning is the main male character, Edouard, who is rejected at birth for being smaller than his brother. Voiced by Ben Bishop in the UK version of the film, his colloquial language and overly casual demeanour comes across as a desperate attempt to be culturally relevant. With references to iconic figures such as David Beckham and Batman , and countries such as Scotland and France, the film loses its historical reference point by shoehorning in popular culture that is yet to happen or impossible for the characters to know about. Whilst many films may refer to current trends to keep audiences interested, Animal Kingdom often leaves you baffled by the placement of this seemingly forced humour.
