Laura Wellington was a preschool teacher who, with her husband Dean, founded financial software and consulting companies. When the mother of four was widowed several years ago, dealing with her grief brought her back to cartoon characters she had sketched as a teenager.

Soon, the hobby became a passion. Thanks to some commercial interest, and her own creativity, "The Wumblers" characters that pop out of watermelons were born. Wellington, a New Jersey resident who has a summer home in Old Saybrook, will soon become a permanent state resident, the result of her pending marriage.

As she prepares for the series launch and looks for a wedding dress, she had some more fun by Spilling the Beans with Java. Q: Where did the word Wumblers come from? And Giddy Gander? You must be the most fun mom in the world. A: Wumblers were characters I started drawing when I was At that time I didn't know what to call them. I met Dean Wellington and we got married, had kids, started our companies. He unexpectedly died of two rare forms of cancer, and I started drawing again.

The creativity was my way of surviving. A friend saw the drawings and said I should do something with them, so I did, and now I have another company called Giddy Gander. I loved the sound of "umbler" for the characters and played with different beginning sounds. The "W" from Wellington is what sounded best. And I am a fun mother. Why not the peach or plum or the kumquat association?

A: Wumblers are born from watermelons, so it was a natural fit. We will also use the partnership to teach children about nutrition, balance in diet, life skills. And watermelon is always associated with fun. Q: So is a Wumbler a fruit or a person? Strictly entertainment or a way to teach? A: Wumblers are characters that teach children about community, how to make the world a better place.

Q: There are so many of these kids' characters. When is enough enough? A: Every child has a preference when it comes to these shows. As parents you had to consider whether the show is doing the child any good; is it benefiting the family; are they being created by people for just a business or people who want to make a difference.

Giddy Gander's goal is to make the world a better place. Wumblers is the kid in me coming out. I consider letting children watch my show a play date where you are allowing your children to play with my Wumblers. You need to know who I am, and I put myself out there. Q: The show has not even aired yet, but you've racked up some awards.

How did that happen? A: There are organizations like the National Parenting Center that have seen an advance of the show and given it its seal of approval. We have launched a website and already have licensing deals. When he passed away I wanted a place so the kids would realize more about what he was and how the area was part of his life and just have some alone time with them, so I bought a place in Old Saybrook. Now I'm going to end up making Connecticut my permanent home because I am getting married again, to a farmer, Wendell Maynard.

I met him in Old Saybrook when I was too lazy to go to the grocery store and instead stopped at a farm stand to buy lettuce. Q: What will you be doing to celebrate the new show?
