Vampire hunter d bloodlust (2001)

You can enjoy the film as a one-off weird tale, a spaghetti Hammer which transposes vampires and their hunter nemeses into a fantasy Wild West, millennia into the future. Not unlike a certain Transylvanian count…. The Bloodlust film was released in , but its hero debuted eighteen years before. D wanders a lawless world ten thousand years in the future. For much of this time, vampires have ruled ordinary humans, but their power is finally waning as mentioned at the start of the Bloodlust film.

New from Japan: Anime Film Reviews

Bloodlust cuts right to the bloody heart of what's great about Japanese animation: shockingly beautiful images nested inside an entertaining storyline, girded on all sides by a heady mix of action, romance, and outright violence. All this and vampires, too!

The fetishistic abandon of the style is brought to the fore in this recent sequel to 's Vampire Hunter D. Astride his trusty, black-as-coal steed and with a massive throat-ripper blade slung across his back, he's like a retro-gothic Yojimbo character out for blood in more ways than one.

In Bloodlust, D is hired by the nobleman father of a young woman who has been kidnapped by the vampiric swell Meier Link Rafter Lee. The old man has also secured the services of the Markus Brothers, a mercenary gang who initially try to best D at his own game but not surprisingly later end up tag-teaming with the semi-undead swordswinger. Director Kawajiri is the man behind the popular anime films Lensman and Neo-Tokyo; he knows his craft from the viscera out, and Bloodlust unequivocally looks like the proverbial million bucks.

My only serious quibble was with the overlong running time, which could easily have been trimmed by a quarter-hour. As usual with anime features, just because it's animated doesn't mean it's for kids; heads roll and blood spurts, so know that going in, mom and dad. For the older crowd, though, it's gory and gorgeous bliss. Now more than ever, we need your support to continue supplying Austin with independent, free press. Support the Chronicle.

In the distant future, the number of vampires is dwindling because of attacks by Hunters, and the deadliest Hunter is the taciturn D voice by Andrew Philpot. Meier escapes with Charlotte--who may be dead or who may have become a vampire--in a rocket hidden within the castle. When D duels with Meier atop a speeding carriage, his cape blows in elaborate computer-generated folds, but his hand-drawn face remains rigid, with only the lips moving, reflecting none of the emotions their confrontation generates. MPAA rating: R, for violence and gore. Times guidelines: considerable graphic violence, including violence against women; brief nudity; grotesque imagery. Based on a novel by Hideyuki Kikuchi and character illustrations by Yoshitaka Amano.

As promised and only slightly delayed, The Casual Anime Podcast discuss director Yoshiaki Kawajiri's adaptation of Vampire hunter D. A.

Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust (movie)

Will she? Will anyone? Can anyone understand this pain, this loneliness? You have to be willing to accept big-eyed, pre teen heroines fighting in huge robots all to the tune of poppy synth music. However, there is a line which I put at utter weirdness when I watch movies, that line is a wisecracking hand. Vampire Hunter D is one of the few anime movies to get a wide theatrical release here in the US. To bad VHD sounds like a new disorder.. Must be VHD!.. Sure, it looks nifty enough, the impressively detailed backgrounds and designs give it a very cool Victorian-Sci-fi look.

Vampire Hunter D

vampire hunter d bloodlust (2001)

The most pleasant surprise of Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust is not just how much of an improvement it is over the original Vampire Hunter D film , but how much it also improves upon its own source material. D himself, the half-vampire hunter always at the epicenter of the action, is little more than our mostly-silent tour guide through his bizarre world. The first book, the source of the original film, served to do little more than establish D and the setting; the movie derived from it did little more than put its action beats up on the screen. Book 2 Raiser of Gales had more character and concept to burn, so the straight-up action of 3 released in English as Demon Deathchase felt like a step backwards. Bloodlust starts in more or less the same place as Deathchase, but it ends up many miles farther along.

Lots of anime features, however, are just grab bags of thematic and visual borrowings. Outfitted as a sort of Napoleonic samurai cowboy, pale-skinned D is the son of an undead father and human mother. The scion of a wealthy family, Charlotte is worth a big reward, so Meier is also being tracked by the Markus Brothers, a tank-driving quartet of sibling bounty hunters who employ Leila, a sexy anti-vampire vamp who just might like to get to know D better. As D and the Markuses pursue Meier, they travel through a land of anachronisms, where horse-drawn carriages elude armored personnel carriers and grandiose Bavarian-style castles loom just down the road from humble adobe churches. Meier is trying to reach the castle of a vampire queen, from which he can hop a rocket ship to a cathedral-like space station, far from persecution by humans.

The film began production in and was completed with the intention of being shown in American theaters. It was shown in six theaters across the United States and received generally positive reception from American critics. Charlotte, a young woman, is abducted by Baron Meier Link, a vampire nobleman who is known not to harm humans needlessly. Charlotte's father hires D to find her and kill her humanely if she turns into a vampire. At the same time, her older brother also hires the notorious Marcus brothers for backup. The two parties D and the Marcus brothers race inexorably after Meier Link. However, Meier Link hires the Mutant Barbarois; a group of lethal mercenary body guards.

Based on a series of fantasy novels by Hideyuki Kikuchi, Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust is a bloody anime adventure. Set in the distant future, the story focuses.

Excellent review of my favorite non Studio Ghibli anime film. I was highly fond of the characters, D and the villain Carmilla in particular, what caught my attention of her was that she was based off of the blood countess, Elizabeth Bathory. I also enjoyed the Gothic soundtrack of the movie.
