The 3D, as usual, is distracting, and for some may be headache-inducing — I still await the arrival of the grand 2D animated IMAX film and be swept away by the visuals rather than grumble about wearing 3D glasses on top of my own. At the cost of sounding like a broken record, it is getting harder to justify a visit to the theater to watch a movie of middling quality when you can just wait for a month and stream it in the comfort of your home. Both of these mainstream animation mainstays speak to the ways contemporary cartoons must try to appeal to kids and their parents. Children find fast-talking animals funny, while adults presumably enjoy recognizing the celebrity voices making with the jibber-jabber. The movie may claim to be a touching story about people needing other people for emotional support and encouragement, or a parable about finding nonviolent solutions to major world problems. But truly, at its core, it is about a Will Smith-voiced pigeon jibber-jabbering through hyperbolic action sequences. Technically, Will Smith voices a human. In the present, Walter accidentally doses Sterling with one of his most ambitious inventions: a substance that turns him into a common pigeon, designed to conceal him from enemies. But it does both of those things reasonably well, especially the pigeon-related slapstick.

But little does Lance realize he will transform into a pigeon to do so! Highly expressive voices from the likes of Reba McEntire add to the ride. Visual focus is on each character, rather than settings of Washington, Japan and a hidden weapons facility in the North Sea. The 3D animation is very well done—especially pigeons with their cheerful strutting and somehow-toothy grins—and cars.
