New ‘Looney Tunes Cartoons’ Batch Coming to HBO Max

Bugs Bunny needs to be extra careful as his longtime nemesis Elmer Fudd is once again packing heat. Last year, the revival series Looney Tunes Cartoons premiered on HBO Max to further continue the feud between the wisecracking rabbit and the wascally wabbit hunter. Based on concerns over cartoon characters using firearms in children's programming, both Elmer Fudd and Yosemite Sam had their guns taken away for the first season of the Looney Tunes revival. For better or for worse, the decision was made to give Mr. Fudd his guns back, and it wasn't long before he put them to use. In the "Rotund Rabbit" segment of the season's sixth episode, Elmer Fudd goes back to his roots by chasing after Bugs Bunny with his old hunting rifle. He shoots at the speedy rabbit, but because Bugs is so fast, the bullet stops itself in midair before announcing, "That's it, I quit! Now with guns! Lee had the character completely scrubbed when he took over the project, and the skunk isn't seen in so much as a cameo. The decision was met with widespread controversy that was only exacerbated when the Droogs from A Clockwork Orange were spotted in the trailer.

You can still catch most of your favorite Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies classics on the Cartoon Network and elsewhere; many have been in heavy syndication for a half-century. But there are a dozen or so that have rarely been seen on television since the s, which while not having been banned outright have been at the very least pulled from circulation by embarrassed copyright holders. While other cartoons had been "cleaned up" with a few cuts -- a blackface character removed here, an off-putting joke edited out there -- these dozen or so cartoons were thought to be so thoroughly riddled with political incorrectness that they were unsuitable for airing no matter how much cutting was done. A fascinating part of our nation's troubled history, I wanted to share them here even though I'm probably about to incite a massive flame war between the "I can't believe they made those!

Though short, the hot-tempered gunslinger with the bushy red mustache and eyebrows was much quicker to pick up on Bugs Bunny's tricks than some of the slower adversaries of the wascally wabbit.

The new Looney Tunes Cartoons are an impressive, delightful throwback to the timeless comedic spirit of those original shorts, but there's one element of the classic cartoons that will not be making a comeback. The same goes for Yosemite Sam, another frequent Bugs Bunny adversary, who will no longer be wielding his dual cowboy pistols. Though he doesn't explicitly say this is in response to the rising concerns about gun violence and calls for gun control in the United States, it's clear that the creators want to avoid making light of gun violence when there have been so many shootings in schools, churches, nightclubs, movie theaters, and pretty much everywhere people congregate. Instead of using a gun to hunt down Bugs Bunny, fans will see Elmer Fudd chasing the wabbit down with a scythe, the blade that the cloaked personification of Death is constantly wielding. Meanwhile, Yosemite Sam can be seen wielding a grass hook. There are also plenty of other traditional weapons the characters will be using, such as cannons, anvils, pianos, and dynamite. As Browngardt puts it, "We're not doing guns.
