How to draw cartoon hands

I am definitely no expert in illustration or cartoon drawing but I did develop my own cartoon style for animations. Unfortunately due to my poor attention span and the nature of creating an animation, I never really created anything full length.

Animation takes a long time and tonnes of patience… I am impatient and short tempered. In regard to Animation, my sole concern with drawing cartoon characters was keeping it simple. It was more important that I could consistently draw it over and over again. I love The Simpsons I think it is one of the greatest shows of all time.

The art style, however, is not something I would ever think to draw. Outright copying is not cool but, it is perfectly fine to pick the bits you like and mix it into your own style. Perhaps you like the mouth shapes from Family Guy and the crude simplicity of South Park. Maybe you like the trippy colours in Rick and Morty but the beautifully crafted backdrops of Final Space.

I am not suggesting you clone all of these styles but you can emulate them in your own way. Most artists begin by emulating their idols and then develop their own style later. When it comes to animation you can draw as little or as much as you want. Especially if you are interested in comedy animations.

I like to remind myself of the Cyanide and Happiness sketches they are hugely successful, brilliantly funny and probably the simplest drawing style ever. Definitely within the realm of any human with opposable thumbs. Also look at South Park.

Probably my favourite animated show of all time and the art style is so basic. This extremely basic animation style makes the crude offensive stuff even funnier in my opinion.

There are tonnes of tutorials on creating perfectly proportioned characters with some magical formula of shapes and lines. They are extremely useful but, if you can draw something you like in your own way and if you can do it consistently, then do that.

This is pretty much how I developed my own way of drawing cartoons. I stopped caring about the proportions and the perfect alignment of body parts. I would rather have half-assed drawings than wait until I was good enough to draw properly, before animating. The example below was after many, many character drawings. After drawing my own way for some time I then began to organize my designs with guides.

You can improve your drawing as you go and then develop your technique. Also the better you get at drawing something the quicker you can draw it. Animation can be a brutal slow process so the easier you can make it, the better.

A big benefit to keeping your cartoon style simple is continuity. When you have to draw a character in many different poses it is very easy to distort and lose the original look of the character. It is much easier to draw a simple character of basic shapes and basic details in many positions.

It will always be the same sphere. Of course, you can take liberties. If you draw a man jumping through a window, nobody is going to notice if the number of buttons on his jacket changes in one frame.

A good way to develop your own cartoon style is by drawing things like famous people, characters and objects in your own way. See how simple you can make it, yet still be recognizable.

I have a strange obsession with drawing Arnold Schwarzenegger in ridiculous ways. And poorly imitating his voice. Most styles are developed not through careful planning but through trial and error over time.

The more animations I created the simpler my drawing style got because I would discard things that took up too much time. Things like shading and fancy lighting all got cut from my style.
