I think it may have been one of the funniest and most original cartoons of the 90s alongside the original Cartoon Cartoons and the Nicktoons themselves.
Yes, I do think it was better than Animaniacs, although that show is great as well. Every cartoon Steven Spielberg made besides the one nobody talks about was amazing. The really funny thing about Freakazoid is that it was essentially a window into the future in a sense; Freakazoid prophecized what the Internet would become years before internet memes and cat videos and such existed all through its title character. The funny thing about that is how little the show actually had to do with the Internet, if only in a tangential sense.
Freakazoid basically has the entire internet downloaded into his brain, but instead of become an omniscient God, he's an unstable, hysterical nutjob who uses the powers of randomness, slapstick and and endless barrage of pop culture references. Freakazoid IS the God of the Internet! Freakazoid is one of the funniest and most out there cartoons I've ever seen, even today. The 80s was one big toy ploy for cartoons and the 90s for the most part however good it was was always at odds with the PTA and Soccer Moms in an effort to make cartoons "more appropriate for kids".
Freakazoid feels like a genuine icon of the golden age of animation; HE is what was locked in the water tower alongside the Warners! Both Freakazoid and The Tick, as crazy as they are still fulfill their duties as superheroes and actually fight evil and injustice most of the time in their own special and funny ways.
The Teen Titans of THIS incarnation almost rarely fight crime, and at times rather feel more heinous then any villains that do show up. Really, I could review a large chunk of this show to prove how it may be one of the most admirable cartoons of the 90s, but I have about 3 planned. Don't deny it, when you were a kid you tried calling for Candle Jack too, it was the Bloody Mary of the 90s to all of us, and would soon be overtaken by Biggie Smalls in the s thanks to South Park!
Throughout the centuries we've all had boogymen of all shapes and sizes come from our imaginations and captivate and terrify us with how they could just kidnap us in the night, some through the mere mention of their names! Candle Jack is that! One of the most frightening villains in a way was also kinda the most upbeat and friendly, despite being a kidnapper! Why does he kidnap everyone who says his name! Because he's a nut! But Candle Jack, while cool isn't the best part of the episode.
It's one of the sweetest things I've ever seen in a cartoon and I could really hear the sincerity in Paul's voice as he says every word; it's also,one of the most out-there moments of the show as a whole. I love every minute of this episode, it's one of those things I think truly deserves the meme it's gotten over the years and I feel it should be spread around more.

Following the successful run of Batman: The Animated Series , Steven Spielberg contacted show co-creator Bruce Timm with whom he was previously associated through Tiny Toon Adventures to request his help in developing a new superhero show that would be made between Amblin Entertainment and Warner Bros. Timm and Paul Dini crafted the pitch for an edgy superhero with a manic personality that would star in a serious adventure show with comedic undertones. Spielberg loved the pitch, but wanted the concept to lean more towards comedy. Timm, feeling unable to deliver the kind of show Spielberg wanted, bowed out of the project. Spielberg called in Tom Ruegger , who had developed Tiny Toons and Animaniacs with Spielberg, to redevelop the series from scratch. This actually led to some criticism from comic book creator Mike Allred who felt the character was a direct lift of his Madman ; from his appearance right down to personality.
