Game Review: Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Z (PS Vita)

Movie tie-in entry in the ever-popular series which focuses on team battles and flashy combat that has tonnes of rough edges, but a surprisingly enjoyable core.

There are four main campaigns here — the Super Saiyan saga, the Freiza saga, the Cell saga and the Buu saga. Each one introduces a new antagonist and set of playable characters and interestingly you get to play as both the good guys and the bad guys in each.

Of course, this is still the same Dragon Ball world everyone loves, full of alien races who shoot fireballs from their hands, power levels, training to defeat ancient powers and soaring through the air. They move around the screen with grace, recoiling from being hit and just generally looking exactly how you imagine a Dragon Ball game would be.

Texture work is brilliant and they all contain destructible elements, making it a joy to watch the chaos and destruction unfold across rolling green plains with the sunset in the distance. Equally, you can do battle over the purple rivers of Planet Namek or in the stunning reflections of Hyperbolic Time Chamber.

This is a beautiful looking Vita game. Combat is a bit more limited. You lock onto enemies with one shoulder buttons you can flick through targets with the analogue stick, which is cumbersome at times when you have to react quickly and throw ranged attacks with circle while triangle is for melee attacks. This ties into the fact that Battle of Z is built around its team based mechanics, where every encounter is 4v4 and characters have set roles.

These are melee close quarters , ki blast ranged combat , support healing and interference attacks that blind or distract foes. At a base level, the combat is fairly shallow, containing the same level of flashiness as something like J-Stars Victory Vs with much fire throwing and smacking across the arena, but little depth beyond this.

Failing to be revived consumes a senzu bean, which you have a limited amount of before you have to restart. Objectively, there is a lot wrong with the combat.

Yet despite this, I really grew to love playing after a while. I did wish for better companion AI and certain fights seemed impossibly challenging at first, but I found with some smart manoeuvres and the right team setup I was able to make it through. The single player mode is a series of missions that take you through the four sagas. Dragon Ball purists will balk at the fact that there are separate playable characters based on forms rather than them transforming in combat, but I quite enjoyed this.

These are equipped to your characters to increase their stats attack power, health as well as giving them access to special attacks and in some cases ultimate abilities. I had no luck finding lobbies and have read reports of lots of disconnects which is a shame, but the options are there at least. It took me around 5 hours to finish the main campaign missions and perhaps double that for the extra missions.

I wanted to mention that there was DLC for this game on Vita — three additional characters including Goku in a Naruto costume, but this has sadly long been delisted. The fun all-digital future, eh? It has plenty of that free-form Artdink DNA in it mixed with smart team mechanics and although the AI can be an absolute pain, I learned to appreciate the game for what it was.

Games Like Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi 3 for PS Vita

Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Z is the latest instalment in the fighting games franchise based upon the popular Dragon Ball Z Japanese manga television series. This is not necessarily a bad thing though as this arguably plays to the strengths of the game as it comes across as though you are not required to have any prior knowledge with the story simply acting as a path from one battle to another, rather than re-telling stories that have already been told and experienced before, which if anything opens the game up to a wider audience beyond just being a game for fans of Dragon Ball Z. You start playing as Goku, but as you progress through the story; you will start to unlock an entire host of characters from immediately after having successfully completed the second mission onwards that will certainly be familiar to anyone that has ever watched Dragon Ball Z before. Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Z is not your typical side scrolling arena based fighting game; as you will find a much more open 3D world akin to a Dynasty Warriors game in regards to design, but obviously with nowhere near as many fighters on screen at once, although the battles still tend to get pretty intense. The environments vary from mission to mission ranging from wastelands to plains to mountains and more besides with some missions taking place at different times of day to give some of the environments a different look and feel to them. The arenas are mostly destructible environments with trees that can be uprooted and destroyed as fighters can be sent crashing against them or through them; rocks and boulders that can be destroyed with fighters sent flying through them and dirt from the ground that can be uprooted as fighters can be sent hurtling back to Earth with a bump from an aerial position.

A new PlayStation job listing is good news for PS3 fans. This is a problem, as it means the only way to play PS3 games on modern PlayStation consoles is with latency. And if you have bad Internet, forget about playing them at all. Why are PS3 games streaming only? Well, Sony can't figure out PS3 emulation, primarily because emulating the PS3 is very challenging due to not only the unique architecture of the console, but because of all the ways developers found unique ways around this architecture that would have to be taken into consideration. All of this said, a new job listing seemingly confirms it's a problem Sony is actively working on remedying.

The PSP was also one of the first wireless handheld systems, bearing an inbuilt Wi-Fi adapter that permitted Internet browsing as well as wireless local play for select games and use as a "second screen" for the PlayStation 3.
