Yes, there is a lot of fan service. As the only male in a school full of girls, expectations are high, as are the chances of misunderstandings. Before even finishing the first episode of Hundred, Infinite Stratos came to mind.
Although men are able to use the Hundred weapons, the fact that every character introduced so far has been female makes both shows feel incredibly similar. The protagonists seem unable to walk three steps before tripping over a new member of their harem.
On top of that, the battles with the Hundred and IS units play out in much the same way, as although the IS units are much larger, the weapons they use are very similar. If you want a show that does basically what Hundred does, just more, then Infinite Stratos is a great watch. Fortunately his fall is broken by a very naked Lisesharte Atismata, princess of the New Kingdom of Atismata, who is understandably not too happy about his intrusion. After the appearance of humans with special abilities, known as Genestella, schools like Seidoukan Academy were created to train young ability users.
A new student at Seidoukan, Amagiri Ayato starts off his school life with style, by accidently peeping on Julis Riessfeld changing. A princess and powerful fire user, Julis challenges him to a duel so she can kick his ass, which is fair enough really.
Along with the appearance of a teasing student council president, a childhood friend, and damsels that need rescuing, it might be a while before Ayato gets around to his true objective: finding his missing sister. With its second cour currently airing, Gakusen Toshi Asterisk is one of the more recent and popular harem shows, and rightfully so, with a kick ass sound track, pretty art and, amusing characters.
While not the most original of concepts, Gakusen Toshi Asterisk gives us the same fun and easy to watch entertainment that Hundred does, with some cool battles, cute girls, and a well-paced story to keep things moving. Blazers, humans capable of using magical powers to materialize weapons. Ikki Kurogane is a new student at Hagun Academy, an academy for Blazers, and one of the worst students at that, an F rank Blazer.
Plot look familiar at all? In a world where magic is as real as science, those with the ability to use it, magicians, hold tremendous power over those who cannot. Tatsuya Shiba, a magician whose powers cannot be measured by normal methods, has just enrolled at the prestigious First High School, along with this sister Miyuki.
If you love watching over powered protagonists kick ass, few shows do it better than Mahouka Koukou no Rettousei, with Tatsuya going from zero to hero, and beyond with no apparent difficulty.
Another school based sci-fi show, like Hundred, Rettousei spends most of the series outside of boring classes, and more time handling bad guys and terrorist organizations. Although certainly featuring some fan service, Rettousei focuses more on plot and character development, with a decent sized cast and enough time to establish a solid story in its 26 episode run.
Mahouka Koukou no Rettousei feels like the school, sci-fi anime that so many recent series want to be. Although it certainly has a more serious feel compared to Hundred, Rettousei is definitely a show any fan of the genres will enjoy.
Throughout the world there are humans who retain memories of their past lives called Saviors. Able to use Ancestral Arts known to their previous selves, Saviors serve to protect the world from evil creatures known as the Metaphysical. Moroha Haimura is one such Savior, now attending Akane Private Academy and trying to piece together broken and half formed memories of his past self.
While Seiken Tsukai no World Break focuses on magic rather than science, it has a very similar set-up to Hundred with an amnesia ridden protagonist, a school for groups of special ability users, and an invasion of dark creatures.
In fact the first few episodes play out like a fantasy version of Hundred, with duels, a protagonist surprised by his incredible powers, and girls in need of saving. Fortunately for us, a lot of other recent shows thought the same way! But although they can seem quite similar, every show has a different feel, whether you want something more ecchi, more serious, or more action packed. With that said, hopefully you found something here that was exactly what you were looking for.
So as you can imagine there some difference of opinion regarding which girl is best girl. Who is the waifu to rule them all. Like her male counterpart, Riko is very easy to embarrass, and gets flustered by just about everything. Additionally she retains his ability to fall into anyone and everyone for no reason at all, which is all around marvellous. In many ways very similar to Nana, Riko is also a total tomboy who would have guessed almost exclusively wearing boys clothes. Good natured and willing to play along with whatever madness is unfolding, regardless of how embarrassing it might be, while not your conventional girl, she sure makes one hell of a waifu.
In spite of her age, Tearju is in the shy girl boat, apparently having little experience with things of the adult realm after devoting herself to science. Despite being the middle child of the three Deviluke sisters, Nana often comes off as the youngest, being blissfully ignorant of many things and getting easily alarmed at the mention of anything ecchi.
On top of her petite loli appearance, and cute twin tails, Nana is the perfect girl in the eyes of many. The only character to beat Momo when it comes to teasing poor Rito, her recent relocation to his shadow has only increased the ease with which she can do so. Although Yami, Mea and Nemesis all have the same Transform ability, Nemesis is by far the most liberal with its usage, switching between cute, flat loli and busty young woman whenever she feels like it. Either way Nemesis is one of the most unique looking members of the cast, and has gained a following amongst tan girl lovers.
The ideal waifu for masochists, Neme-chan will be more than happy to keep you around, as her pet that is. She does the cooking, the cleaning, the walking in on you in the bathroom: perfect little sister Mikan Yuuki. As imoutos go, Mikan is one of the most mature ones about, looking after the whole house by herself, including little flower girl Celine.
In fact, along with Haruna she stands out as one of the sanest girls amongst the otherwise fascinating cast. Often seen apron on and ladle in hand, Mikan is already designed as the wife of the house, looking after her hopeless husband Rito , baby Celine and teenage daughters Deviluke sisters. Whenever something shameless occurs, it should always be that Yui Kotegawa is around to point it out by shouting loudly and pointing. But you can only hide from reality for so long, and watching Yui come to terms with her own feelings is the most satisfying thing about her character.
Seeing all her walls crumble when put in the right situation is endearing, as is watching her think about relationships in non-ecchi ways: walking together, having children, the normal stuff. The fact that the besotted girl thinks about sweet things like this, makes her excellent waifu material.
Like super high level hard to get. Shy types like Yami are incredibly popular, wanting little more than to stay in the company of those who are important to them. Her transform ability has its various uses too, not just saving your butt when aliens attack, but as her own experiments have shown, she change the size of anything. This teasing and cute combo is for sure what makes Momo one of the most popular girls in the series.
Well that on top of the half-naked in bed thing. Infact, the general lack of clothing in many of her appearances has been a large asset to her popularity.
Cute, sweet, and innocent, Haruna is everything one would expect from a high school girl heroine. The runaway royalty and reason why this all started, Lala Satalin Deviluke is the first Princess of Deviluke and mad inventor extraordinaire.
Despite her qualities as a princess and apparent intellectual, all of that gets over ridden by her relentless enthusiasm. Despite her genius, beauty, and insane strength, Lala has an almost child-like innocence and purity about her, never looking down on others or casting judgement.
This kindness along with her constantly upbeat nature makes Lala an amazing person to be around, bringing light to even the crappiest of days. With so many different girls, and all of them getting plenty of screen time and development, in the end the waifu decision comes down mostly to preference. Like lolis? Well might we recommend you a blonde assassin or this sweet little sister. We have several to choose from, would you prefer her to have a plan or a kind of stab in the dark type attitude?
So who would you want to have around, for better or worse, for richer for poorer, in sickness and in health?
When thinking of big harem anime from recent years, Date A Live is undeniably one of the names that comes to mind. Although the game-like mechanics in real life trope has been done countless times now, Date A Live does an excellent job of fitting the always amusing cheesy date idea into an otherwise fairly standard harem show. In fact one of the best things about Date A Live is simply getting to see how each girl reacts on her date.
Are they in control, shy, where do they want to go, what are they wearing? Yoshino straddles the border between love interest and little sister for Shido, making their relationship one of the more interesting ones to watch. Particularly when it throws off the other girls. Although one of the younger girls of the group, and least powerful, Yoshino is also one of the smartest, with most of her more intricate thoughts voiced through her puppet Yoshinon.
Along with that, her easy to embarrass, delicate personality is what makes her so charming, particularly when put into ecchi situations. Not only does it do an excellent job of enhancing her modest chest, but it dips and curves in all the right places to give us the best possible view. Her accidental utterances of Nii-sama are always nice to hear as well, oh how she misses her big brother!
How a human can live with being this tired all the time we will never understand, but somehow Reine manages to get by. Even as tired as she is, Reine is one of the most grounded characters in the show, often providing advice to everyone, whether it be battle tactics or dating related. On top of that her dishevelled hair and tired eyes give an oddly casual and wild look to someone who is otherwise sensible and organized.
Part commander of the Ratatosk organization, part fire Spirit, and part middle schooler little sister, Kotori has a lot going on. First is her pink and white shimapan, which she is kind enough to show us whilst waking up her brother of all things. Second is her choice of swimsuits: both the cute, frilly, and pink one, and the tight and white one are simple with innocent colors and work so well with her slight frame.
And lastly her Astral Dress, an almost kimono like robe falling off her shoulders, which flares out at the bottom to show off her legs. Even after being sealed though her voice remains as beautiful as ever, and her flirtatious, lady like personality sticks around as well.
One of the perkiest girls of the group, Miku is always seen with a smile, which along with her light purple eyes makes her face incredibly pretty. Along with her impressive idol wardrobe, Miku has one of the biggest busts in the series, which can never be a bad thing, particularly when all her outfits do such a good job of showing it off.
One Angel, two girls, Kaguya is the flatter half of the Yamai twins. Tsundere and kind of childish, Kaguya is the more excitable and immature one, often sayings things without really thinking. She also appears to have an interest in cute, black, gothic Lolita type clothing, such as her outfit from her date during Date A Live Movie: Mayuri Judgment and of course her black polka dot swimsuit.
Considering them as individual characters though, Kaguya and Yuzuru both have gorgeous designs. Along with that, her slim figure is always great to see in between the otherwise flat loli or big busted girls of the show.
Diligent classmate and anti-Spirit Team fighter, Origami has her own ideas when it comes to logic, bending reason whenever needed to get what she wants. Regardless of that quirk, Origami is an intelligent girl who is shown to lack common sense and experience more than anything. To be blunt, Origami is really, really weird.
Her obsession with Shido knows no bounds, whether it means dressing up as a swimsuit wearing dog, or a pretty maid girl. The other half of the Spirit sisters, Yuzuru is the more logical thinking one of the two, with her robotic way of speaking adding yet more emphasis to the trait.
