For the first time in 48 years, the Pulitzer Prize Board chose not to name a winner in Editorial Cartooning — a decision some are calling an insult to all cartoonists. Winners were named in all 14 other journalism categories. The last time no award was given in Editorial Cartooning was in It is fairly unusual — but not unprecedented — for the Pulitzer Board to decide not to name a winner in one of its journalism categories.

The Political Cartoon of the Year Awards 2019

CRNI presents this award to a cartoonist who in the last twelve months has shown remarkable courage while suffering a threat or threats that constitute a violation of their human rights, especially their freedom of expression as defined by Article 19 of the UN Declaration of Human Rights. Read about all the previous Courage in Cartooning Award Winners here. While making their nominations correspondents may wish to consider the regions that have seen the most obvious and egregious collapses in human rights standards over the last year.

We have already reported on the alarming backslide in Malaysia and there are signs of a very similar downward trend in India. The whole world has been seized by the horror of the Myanmar coup and the the most recent violence in Gaza. We are also reminded of those nations that have suffered severely under governments unable or unwilling to manage the pandemic, most notably Brazil. Of course there are are many individual cases of note too, from cartoonists singled out by politicians to those disappeared into the penal system or taken to court by overly sensitive public officials.

Email us your Courage Award nomination. The email should contain a brief description of the problems faced by the cartoonist. And if possible please include contact information for them, a family member or other representative.

The cut-off date for nominations is Friday, July 9th at For the second year in row, and as measures taken against the COVID pandemic continue, we do not anticipate making an in-person award presentation. An online announcement will be made in the fall. Note: CRNI does not present its award to a specific cartoon in recognition of its excellence and so is not seeking the submission of cartoons about freedom of expression or threats to it.

Mark Fiore , whose animated political cartoons appear on SFGate. It is the first time since the category of editorial cartooning was created in that the Pulitzer has gone to an artist whose work does not appear in print. The Pulitzer jury said Fiore's "biting wit, extensive research and ability to distill complex issues set a high standard for an emerging form of commentary" - online video cartooning. Fiore, 40, reached at his home in Fairfax, said he had been caught off guard by news of the award, which is given by the Columbia University School of Journalism. Fiore was one of the first print editorial cartoonists to make the transition to the online medium when he began doing work for SFGate. First Place: An excellent depiction of a pressing social issue: the absorption of people in their phones at the expense of personal contact. The horizontal shading behind the cloud works nicely with the fine lines of the illustration while the white space gives it room to breathe. This op-ed cartoon would be right at home in the pages of a major American newspaper or magazine, and it pairs perfectly with the accompanying editorial column. Second Place: A comprehensive illustration of the stereotyping that occurs behind the seemingly innocuous rituals of school spirit costumes and Halloween, this cartoon combines attractive, colorful artwork with thought-provoking content. Contains more text than a typical editorial cartoon, but it works here because the writing is sharp and effective.

While the medium, woodcut, and the image are fairly simple, the message is clear and directly takes on the absence of unity between the American colonies at the time. It was believed that a snake would resurrect if its severed parts were reunited before the stroke of midnight, and this cartoon plays on that superstition.

Pulitzer-Prize Winning Cartoonists Object To New Category Wins

An artist from Moncton has won a prestigious American award for excellence in editorial cartooning on Wednesday. Cartoonist Michael de Adder is this year's winner of the Herblock Prize, which was created in to support editorial cartooning "as an essential tool for preserving the rights of the American people through freedom of speech and the right of expression. Last July in a much-criticized decision, he was let go from Brunswick News Inc. De Adder said he's the first Canadian to receive the U.

On Monday, Barry Blitt won a Pulitzer for his political illustrations, which frequently criticize President Donald Trump and his administration.
