Kino's Journey (TV)

The first four episodes have been posted before, but had been put on hold due to how much energy writing them demanded of me. You can buy the series here , or watch it dubbed on Hulu here , if you live in the United States. Each write-up might differ in style, length, and focus. I might spend more time on the episode, its ideas, or what it made me think of, or feel. Well, this was interesting. This reminded me more than a tad of Mushishi.

Travelers who do not wish to get too involved, a new place and a new story each time. Likewise, I suspect the best way to watch this series would be an episode a day. Hermes is the patron god of travelers, but also of charlatans and gamblers. But when you think about it, travelers are often both.

Hermes certainly wants her back. And they can always go back. When it comes to people, you experience continuously changing things, the more time you spend with them. And they got burnt. This is exactly what all relationships are like, including his desire to form a connection with Kino now. After you get hurt, you run away from the appearance of a new connection, but you still desire it, and you go into it — though opening yourself up also opens you to being hurt again.

Locked inside our heads. There was a moment about a lie — but if everyone knows something is a lie, is it? If I lie, and you know I lied, and I know you know, is it still a lie? What purpose does it serve at that point? Please do not bring content beyond the first episode into the discussion. You can follow the full travelogue here. This post has originally been submitted by Foxy Lady Ayame, forgive my avatar for intruding on this reposting. I know journalists who have traveled around the world and yet their mind has remained closed to things.

But if one sees someone near them changing, they are much more likely to change opinions and be more welcoming of diversity. We keep the same name throughout our lives in the West -most of the times- because of practical reasons and because society deems it necessary to see a person as a continuing reference rather than a shifting being.

In Japan artists changed multiple times names for different stages of their training and career for a period in the past. Change may bring discomfort after all. Each time its use is real and has different hues. If on the other hand you have a superficial social connection with someone, you can pass unscathed.

By travelling to a different location with different people just means you get to experience a location and people who are in a different stage of shifting compared to the people and location in your original location. You just skip a few steps, so to speak. Philosophically, this argument may hold some merit, but in practice, I think the two do have their own separate merits. Nor do I remember ever dreaming about flying.

Maybe I should go birdwatching more often. Can a traveller ever decide to immediately stop travelling? Can a human consciously decide to stop changing? I know, this sounds like something an amateur philosopher would throw at you to try to sound smart and the last question makes little sense , but it does sort of answer your question.

Impermanence, imperfection and incompleteness. For someone who practices this school of philosophical thought, this question would probably be easy.

From a western perspective, this certainly feels like a paradox. But, perfection has its own problems. Just imagine a perfectly black perfect sphere. It reflects no light. On a more historic note, consider the paintings of Kazimir Malevich.

If I recall correctly, he stopped painting stuff like this after he finished the second one. Anyway, this is kinda what I think of when I think of perfection.

Hermes is less trusting, which goes well with how she is happy to wander the world but he wants back home.

She goes where the road goes. She thinks of herself as an outside observer. The new experiences we gain from switching locations and meeting new people, or the new experiences we gain as we let people shift over time?

Have you ever been jealous of birds? Honestly, this specific segment is very classic Greek Philosophy. Is pain part and parcel of human relationships? Is imperfection a source of beauty? They have many fascinating adventures and interactions with interesting people in the towns they visit. In recent years, a new version was made, but I prefer the older one. Each episode, or sometimes every 2 episodes, Kino and Hermes go to a different country. These are fictional countries btw, and each one is extremely small. It has fascinating stories, characters, mysteries, or concepts each episode.

First Impression: Kino no Tabi ~ The Beautiful World ~

Know I haven't blogged on here a while but felt I should do a review on this anime since it's not well known. I was recommended it recently by someone I met and felt it deserved some attention. It is available as a light novel Manga series but I haven't read it, so the review is only on the anime. I am trying not to disclose Kino's gender in this review as Kino's character is androgynous and you will have to watch the series to find out more. Kino no Tabi: The Beautiful World is a short 13 episode anime series, there are also an extra 3 longer episodes, one of which is a prequel to the series, the other two episodes are based around the series. It focuses on Kino who travels to different countries with a motorad named Hermes. Kino has one strict rule which is to never stay in one country more than 3 days to avoid wanting to settle down and therefore cease being a traveller. Also Kino will only ever travel with Hermes.

Searching for products Fans descended on the corpse of ADV like a wake of vultures, triggering some justifiably fruity responses when some fans had the temerity to complain about the service, to some overburdened, overworked, and soon to be unemployed representative. Kino is a young adventurer who is travelling the world on a motorrad named Hermes, to all intents and purposes a talking motorcycle. It's a strange world that Kino travels, set in some unspecified future, full of wonders and mystery. It's not for the timid, and naturally Kino is armed for self-defence.

The first four episodes have been posted before, but had been put on hold due to how much energy writing them demanded of me.

Kino's Journey is episodic anime defined. With the exception of a single two-parter, all episodes begin and end mostly the same way; Kino and Hermes go to a town, meet people, stuff happens, and they leave at episode's end. That's pretty much it. But to quote Carlos' Azumanga Daioh review; "And yet, that's not it. Kino is helpful, kind, and often listens to everyone when they talk.

Kino travels with the trusty talking motorrad, Hermes. The duo are always together, with Hermes providing speed, and Kino providing balance. And so Kino and Hermes journey ever onward…. None of the locations they visit in this opening volume are what they appear to be which gives way to an element of tragedy in each of them a town where children appear to be lobotomised before they can grow up and reach their full potential, a country where telepathy drives the residents into isolation and a stretch of railway line that is populated by a group of longtime railworkers unaware of the work being done behind them.

My recent trip to Japan as a traveler has only rekindled my dormant enthusiasm for this franchise. We begin with Kino camped outside. She appears to be getting ready to fall asleep. A revolver lays atop her chest. Her palm clutches the handle.

Kino, a year-old traveler, forms a bond with Hermes, a talking motorcycle. Together, they wander the lands and venture through various countries and places, despite having no clear idea of what to expect.

I have a confession to make: I don't like most post anime series. The shift in animation style, obsession with pre-adolescent girls, excessive fan service, abundance of gore, and high school dramedies make me wary and weary of many popular anime. Fortunately, a show comes out once in a while that reminds me why I continue to watch and love it. Kino's Journey Kino no Tabi subverts many of these cliches. At first glance, this isn't too apparent. Kino's animation is rather limited, its protagonist has a large doll eyed face, and its opening theme is an overly peppy J-pop song. Outside of these factors though, the show bears little resemblance to the likes of Naruto or Inuyasha.

This is annoying. It is about a traveller called Kino and her motorbike referred to as a motorrad named Hermes — which can inexplicably talk. Each episode is about the strange people or stranger countries the pair happens upon in their travels. I really like the concept.
