Miyazaki howl

Howl's Moving Castle is an animation fantasy movie written and directed by Hayao Miyazaki in The film is loosely based on the novel of the same name by British author Diana Wynne Jones. Influenced by Miyazaki's opposition to the United States' invasion of Iraq in , Howl's Moving Castle contains strongly anti-war themes. Miyazaki stated that he "had a great deal of rage about [the Iraq war]," which led him to make a film which he felt would be poorly received in the US. It also explores the theme of old age, depicting age positively as something which grants the protagonist freedom.

View All Critic Reviews Mar 21, Miyazaki emphasizes different narrative elements than most fantasy films of this kind hence why the "missing prince" plot twist is treated like an afterthought but this isn't a cheap attempt to subvert expectations rather he's focusing on character growth at the expense of silly plot mechanics which makes his anti war plea more effective.

Alec B Super Reviewer. Oct 18, Fans of the book "Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell" will love this film. Letitia L Super Reviewer. Apr 10, More imaginative than a barrel of monkeys, the story here is secondary to the execution, and the story is better than most by far.

A fairytale, yes, but for young and old. Don't allow naysayers to put you off. Kevin M. W Super Reviewer. An excellent film, and one of Miyazaki's absolute best. This is a masterpiece of an animated film, and is so much fun to watch.

I love this movie.

Studio Ghibli Season – Howl’s Moving Castle

Flight is a constant fixation for Hayao Miyazaki, a director for whom part of the power of animation is the ability to open up new avenues of movement across azure, cloud-dappled canvasses. As demonstrated most fully in his near-valedictory pinnacle The Wind Rises , such flying crafts tend to have a dual use, outfitted for the dispensation of broad-scaled, mechanized violence upon those who remain earthbound. This is all conveyed via an opaque plot that borders on incoherence, its tangled machinations falling a distant second to the weighty power of the visuals. Part of this confusion at least seems intentional, as protagonist Sophie Chieko Baisho remains on the fringes of the actual conflict, attempting to navigate a nascent relationship with the mysterious sorcerer Howl Takuya Kimura and his coterie of weird assistants. Other times it propels itself through the sky, juddering like an unsteady balloon. Many of these metamorphoses are sinister, particularly the semi-villainous Witch of the Waste, her shriveled true form obscured within a squishy mantle of shifting flesh, and the aging spell she casts on Sophie, who spends most of the film in the enforced guise of a withered crone.

The major depiction of human-animal relations is that of secondary protagonist Howl as he gradually transforms into a bird-like creature in order to interfere with an ongoing war. Woodblock print depicting legendary first emperor Jimmu, who saw a sacred bird flying away while he was in the expedition of the eastern section of Japan. The depiction of Howl as a bird-like beast therefore signifies his adoption of an animalistic nature in order to combat the threat of industrial machinery which is utilised by the warring factions. By emphasising a return to a pastoral ideal, the film demonstrates that both Howl and society at large must tackle their inner ugliness in order to co-exist with the imperfect beauty of the natural world. In order to move away from the nightmarish industrial landscape of the war, humans must be prepared to accept the potential benefits of their animalistic qualities and consider a more peaceful relationship with the natural world.

Enjoying: Concentrate less on the story, more on the extraordinary visuals. This seems a simple, well, more or less simple love story.
