Family patriarch Eustace puts Courage down, always berating him with insults like "Stupid dog. Muriel, is the portrait of a perfect dog mom. This quote exemplifies her cluelessness in the best possible way. This one speaks for itself. It's the most classic quote from the show. The absurdity of a bathtub barracuda giving life advice to a cowardly dog is a fun thing to think about, but the quote obviously has a deeper meaning. As it turns out, when guys are hanging out with their buddies, being jerks, drinking beers, eating wings and talking about girls, there's a very specific grading system.

It's not just about looks. There's a whole list of criteria to be discussed. Remember in middle school when girls all called each other "sluts" as the number one insult? It turns out they were very, very wrong. I was recently informed that I am considered a "hoe. Now, in fairness, the most legitimate flirting I actually do is greet every boy, "Hey, handsome! But I digress. As my conversations with my guy friends have entered that dangerous territory, the unknown abyss of "what men actually think about women," I have picked up on some of the lingo.

There is apparently a huge difference between a hoe, a slut, and a whore. There are also "slam pigs" and "nice girls" who kind of fall outside of the spectrum. The following definitions come from real, bona fide men who must know everything about feminine sexuality. A hoe is the most mild--basically a meaner name for a flirt or a tease. This, from what I've gathered, is what boys call you when you shut them down. It can't be that we just aren't interested, it has to be a character flaw.

A slut acts like she wants the D, and then she actually gets it. But not too much. She has boundaries and limits and possibly even standards. A whore means business. All the guys can sit and tell stories about their own personal experiences with this one. At least these three are all considered pretty. On the other hand, a "slam pig" might be used to refer to someone the guys find less than attractive, but will still sleep with her.

Everyone sleeps with her anyways. As women, we need to stop allowing ourselves to be defined by our sexuality. How come if a below average guy means business and has hooked up with more girls than he can count, he is "the man," but for women it's an insult or something to be shamed for? It's degrading. It's offensive. We need to stop letting ourselves fall under these labels. Consent is sexy--no means no, and yes means yes, and your sex life is your business and all the boys who want to make judgments on it are actually not invited to do that.

Long has required reading during summer vacation been a hallmark of the American education system. However, as many people know, most students are typically reluctant to read for class during the year, let alone during their breaks. Often, students protest to summer assignments in hopes of reducing the requirements or, more extremely, abolishing the summer reading program altogether.

In an age where students are directing their attention more to the screen and less to the page, a question arises: Should schools require summer reading?

Many claim that yes, summer assignments should be required, even necessary, in order to prevent a phenomenon known as "summer slide. The association reports that students typically lose anywhere between two and three months of reading skills while on break. Requiring students to participate in a summer reading program will supposedly combat this slide, and help to improve students' reading ability. Summer learning is important for the success of a student. However, summer reading is typically only enjoyable for one group of students: those who enjoy reading.

All to often does a student say "I'm just not a book person," or "I hate reading books. Requiring disinterested students to read anywhere from two to three books per summer is comparable to demanding that someone who passionately dislikes classical music to listen to two or three of Beethoven's symphonies.

How, then, can summer language arts assignments effectively reach all students? The aim of summer reading is ultimately to both prescribe a cultural confrontation through literature, and demand some form of analysis in response. In an article for Time magazine, Charlotte Alter reported that as children get older they read less and less for pleasure, following a steady decrease over the past 30 years.

As attention has clearly shifted away from literature, interested educators can hope to turn to the new "center of attention" for ideas on how to re-vamp summer homework. Television shows and movies, both broadcast and streamed, have most likely become the new center of attention for students. With more free time in the summer months, students are more inclined to kick back, relax and power through five seasons of "Breaking Bad.

Summer vacation should be a time for students to unwind after a long year of school work and testing. Some students enjoy picking up a book that interests them, sitting in their favorite spot and reading for hours. Others prefer to curl up on the couch, turn on the TV and stream the next season of their favorite show. Regardless of how our students prefer to spend their summers, it is time for the definition of "summer reading" to be expanded to include their interests and strengths.

Both turning the page, and turning the channel can keep students engaged and educated during the summer months. You see the fireworks, bright colors of the American flag; smell the smoke left behind, the hot dogs on the grill; feel the humidity rolling down the back of your neck, the mosquitos nipping behind your knees; taste buttery corn and sticky popsicles; and hear the crackle, applause, and drunken cheering as the holiday finishes off for the night.

The Fourth is never really considered a thought-provoking holiday like other ones are. Christmas is famous for the internal struggle it poses for children weighing the importance of presents over the temptation of misbehaving.

Easter's strong Christian ties indicate it toward prayer and religious celebration. New Year's provokes meditation on the past year's events and the future year's oncoming. Halloween, perhaps, is a similarly aesthetic-driven holiday to the Fourth, but the psychology of fear and the different ways people can celebrate it makes it different.

Americans share the same vision of the Fourth of July. Red, white and blue, a green field, smoke from the grill trailing up into the yellow sun, as hot day turns to muggy night and the lawn chairs come out under the fireworks show. For me this year is different.

I think about the Fourth of July now with Perhaps with apathy. I do not hate the people I am surrounded by, but neither do I feel the same kind of pride toward my country that I am supposedly expected to feel. I am in a place I love, under a sky I can't help but admire, under a government that I feel does not represent me. If we as a country all have the same collective experience during the Fourth, then the Fourth of July unites me with the half of the population that our current government actually does represent.

Does this make the holiday a beautiful one, or an ugly one? What are the fireworks, and what is the smoke left behind? What is making America great and what is leaving millions of citizens without healthcare? I can wear my red t-shirt and my blue shorts, eat my corn on the cob, lounge in my lawn chair and toast to America declaring independence from the British Empire.

Sweat will drip down my face and I'll sip from a water bottle with water droplets forming on the outside. I'll press the cool bottle on the back of my neck after a round of frisbee with my brother and an obscure family friend's twelve year-old son, and I'll point at the fireworks saying, "that one's my favorite I think.

With only a few more weeks left of summer vacation, here are five more ways you can take advantage of the rest of what summer has to offer. A lot of college kids swore up and down that they were going to the beach and haven't been yet. Looking for a quick get away? Pile a few good friends in the car and head to the nearest beach for a fun and relaxing day. This is one of the few things I told myself I was going to do when I came home, and still plan on doing!
