But now I've finally taken a dive into the world of Gundam and begun with the first series to be set outside the main Gundam universe - the series probably best known to the Western world due to its prominence on Toonami's anime block during the early noughties. Gundam Wing boasts a sizable amount of mobile suits. This includes the notorious "Gundams" as well. However, like most Gundam series, Mobile Suits weren't just readily available and they didn't just pop up out of nowhere. This blog is a description of how mobile suits came to be in the "After-Colony" timeline which is where Gundam wing takes place. So how did these giant humanoid war machines come to be?

The five scientists who had built the Gundams plaguing OZ were also at the lunar base, captured and forced to develop new mobile suit technology to secure OZ's rule over Earth and the space colonies. Despite their apparent "cooperation," however, the scientists also began rebuilding both the Shenlong and the XXXGD Gundam Deathscythe in secret, preparing for the day when captured Gundam pilots Chang Wufei and Duo Maxwell could return to the battlefield. That opportunity came when the Romefeller Foundation - the political force behind OZ - became split over a number of issues, and the "Treize Faction" of OZ attacked the lunar base, which at the time was still under the control of Romefeller loyalists. The improvements given to the Altron were dramatic. The old beam glaive was replaced with a double-ended twin beam trident, and both arms were outfitted with Shenlong's highly effective "dragon fang" extending arms and claws hence the Altron name, taken from the Chinese "ertou long" or "two-headed dragon". Along with increased mobility from it's "wing binders" on its back which enhances it's mobility in space, the Altron also mounted a pair of beam cannons on a "stinger tail," giving it effective ranged firepower for space combat both the wings and tail stinger were removed in the OVA version The new Altron was henceforth a menace to the White Fang army during the "Eve Wars". After AC , Wufei, wanting to see what the true meaning of justice is, took the Altron with him to the newly formed Marimeia Army instead of sending it into the Sun with the other Gundams. Wufei, seeing that true peace could not be achieved through Operation Meteor, rebelled against the Marimeia Army during the battle in Brussels. After the rebellion, the Altron was later self-detonated by Wufei.

In the distant future, Mankind has colonized space with clusters of space colonies at each of the five Earth-Moon Lagrange points, and down on the Earth, the nations have united as the United Earth Sphere Alliance. However, the Alliance oppresses the colonies with its military power. The colonies desire a peaceful resolution to the situation, joining together in a movement headed by the pacifist Heero Yuy. Yuy is shot dead by an assassin, forcing the colonies to search for other paths to peace.

When Mobile Suit Gundam debuted, most giant robot anime was about magical, sentient robots fighting against the forces of evil, but Gundam was more of an unflinching yet still somehow kid-friendly war drama that showed regular people interacting with more realistic machinery. Old mecha anime showed robots being operated by radio commands or fantastical energy, but mecha in Gundam were operated more like they would be in real life, with pedals and levers and tactile switches paving the way for stuff like Robotech here in the West. Since the original show launched, the Gundam brand has raked in money from video games and model kits, all while Japanese animation studio Sunrise has continued to crank out over a dozen sequels and spin-off shows. You just need to know where to start. So, what is a Gundam? Depending on the story, a Gundam is either a state-of-the-art, bleeding-edge weapon of war or an ancient, outdated piece of machinery that was left behind for being too exotic or dangerous. You can tell a Gundam from every other mobile suit because they typically have an eyebrow-like crest on the forehead, a red chin thing, and a primarily white paint scheme with occasional red or blue highlights.
