Overall, the world of animation is an eclectic mishmash of styles and tones, and they aren't all for children. That said, shows generally geared toward little kids will take a dark turn every now and again. When this occurs, it gives the impression that the showrunners and writers have a respect for their audience and trust them to handle more unpleasant subjects. These moments can range from the psychologically disturbing to the graphically violent. Plenty of all-time classic shows, including "Batman: The Animated Series," "Adventure Time," and "SpongeBob SquarePants" have drifted to the dark side, pushed a few boundaries, and achieved great acclaim in the process.

4 Times ‘Tom & Jerry’ Was Too Dark & Disturbing To Be A ‘Cartoon Show For Kids’

These are just moments I personally found disturbing and even fear inducing. These will go in order from least disturbing to most disturbing, and if you have any other disturbing moments in mind, tell me by all means.

But it had its moments as well, the most popular being in the second T. I put this one here because the look of some of these clones are somewhat eerie and disturbing. He tricks her into thinking Danielle has it out for him, and after meeting Danielle, she discovers she knows Danny and tricks her into leading her right to him.

Meanwhile, Vlad has plans to melt Dani to find out why she lasted longer than the other clones did. We see her slowly melt into goop, hearing her terrified screams and the fear in her eyes as she almost dies. The reboot of Ducktales, despite only having 2 seasons so far, has received very positive feedback, and personally, is one of my favourite cartoons.

One of these new original characters being Lena DeSpell. Lena tricks Webby into helping her find the dime, but clearly shows signs of guilt once actually getting the dime. And while Lena rejects searching for the dime anymore, we get one more disturbing moment from this episode. Lena is fed up with Magica treating her like a puppet and tries to tell Scrooge about her aunt. But something stops her from getting her words out, and when nobody's looking, we see Magica overshadow Lena, making the young girl fall to her knees, whimpering and grunting in agony as she tries to resist the possession.

I know it certainly happened to me. To be fair though, she did put it on before it was done. But the manager throws her out after revealing that he hates robots and has the right to refuse service to them.

However, despite the adorable appearance it gives her, the scene where the skin attaches itself to Jenny is actually terrifying and somewhat uncomfortable to look at. It's wires attach themselves to her face and it crawls up her arms and body like some kind of parasite.

And to make matters worse, we find out the skin is sentient and it starts to brainwash Jenny after attaching itself to her by force in her sleep. And Jenny actually believes it for a while, too. That is until Brad is in danger and she finally fights back, shorting the skin out and forcing it off of her. This moment, or rather moments, are disturbing for two reasons: One, because of the look of the skin itself.

How ugly and dull it looks and the crude stitching resembling some kind of Frankenstein horror monster. Two, the fact that it becomes sentient and can manipulate its wearer is also crazy disturbing, not to mention spine-tingling.

She was once a star on a T. And in the end of the episode, while on the run from Batman, she finds herself staring into a mirror and realizing that her fantasies are just that, fantasies. As stated in the beginning, this moment is a different type of disturbing. A more psychologically disturbing one considering that Baby Doll is trapped in a false reality that her show was real, and when she gets broken out of it, we see a psychotic side to her and eventually a depressed one that wants to still make believe.

My Little Pony is a series that has seen a few reboots, and many toy lines. However, there are a number of disturbing moments in the show, mostly ones where the characters go crazy or they make these… uncomfortable faces.

In this episode, Rainbow Dash, who is always somewhat obnoxious, is pranking everybody around Ponyville and making them pretty upset. Pinkie Pie tries talking Dash out of it, but fails.

And later, when she visits Pinkie, she sees that she is sick in bed and has eaten every joke cookie in the box she gave to her. But Pinkie is acting strange and almost deranged, begging for more cookies in a hysteric voice. Dash is creeped out, because wouldn't be?

But the cookies have turned them into gray, pale, cookie craving zombies. Dash eventually finds Rarity, Applejack and the CMC, and the six of them barricade themselves in the Apple Family Barn and plan to wait until the effects of the cookies wear off. But then, all of them except Dash eat the cookies and fall victim to the sickness and become zombies as well. Rainbow Dash is terrified, screaming for mercy and for them to stay back and not eat anymore cookies.

And then we see that the ponies are not actually sick after all, but rather playing a revenge prank on Dash to teach her a lesson about going to far with her own jokes. What makes this moment disturbing is the eerie setting it takes place in. All of Ponyville is lifeless and shadowy, as if the town itself is in on the prank, and the way everyone looks and sounds is also spine tingling, many of them having messy, tousled manes, bags under their shrunken, lifeless eyes, and the moans they make.

And moving away from the disturbing part of this episode, I really enjoyed the message it sent: Pranks and jokes are funny, but if you overdo them, and even take them too far, it can cause people, even your close friends, to see you as a bully. So, good job, MLP, I enjoyed this episode and the message it told the viewers.

Steven Universe is by far one of the greatest cartoons to date in the 21st century. In this episode, Steven and Connie get the Diamonds to help them try and escape Homeworld and return to Earth. However, White Diamond stops them, and after a tense scene where Blue Diamond and Yellow Diamond try to tell White Diamond how they feel, we see the start of a disturbing moment. White shoots beams at her fellow Diamonds, causing them to become gray and lifeless and they move like marionette puppets, with robotic jerks and stilled expressions.

And she does the same thing to the Crystal Gems, making the scene even more creepy and uncomfortable, and actually, White Diamond herself is creepy and uncomfortable as well. She seems to lack the ability to understand people, she seems to completely lack all sense of empathy and even love. And it gets creepier still when White Diamond begins taunting Steven, picking him apart like a hard boiled egg to expose every flaw, making him feel more broken by the minute.

Then, she picks him up, lifts his shirt, and pulls his gemstone right out of him! And again, that send shivers down my spine as did these moments from the season 5 finale…. Now, although Captain Planet focuses more on teaching people about environmental pollution, such as deforestation, acid rain, and nuclear radiation, I found it very admirable that it actually taught people about two very serious issues in the series.

This episode is about Linka, the Planeteer from Eastern Europe who has the power of wind, visiting her Uncle Dimitri and her cousin Boris.

Boris unfortunately buys a whole bag and takes a pill. Boris secretly drugs Linka by slipping a Bliss pill into her Blini in a desperate attempt to bring her to Skumm in exchange for more Bliss. Linka becomes part of the Bliss addicted crowd and desperately craves more and more, not wanting to feel the pain that comes after the pills wear off.

We also see that the more people consume Bliss, the worse their bodies look. Linka, Boris, and the other addicts grow more zombie-like with baggy eyes, pale skin, and sunken cheeks. In the end, Boris downs half a bottle of Bliss, and soon dies from the massive overdose. Yes, Bliss is a fake drug, but the symptoms it displays are actually reminiscent of a real drug known as meth.

In the fact that it warps a person's brain, destroys their sense of reason and even humanity, gives a temporary sense of not feeling pain, and also the adrenaline rush is similar to how violent the Bliss users behave once they become addicted. So, yes, this moment was very very disturbing, but at the same time necessary, since a child can become addicted to drugs and even fall into things such as underage drinking and even smoking.

I always love when kid shows touch on realistic, serious issues like this. In the first episode we see that bullying is definitely serious enough when the character Francis, also known as F-Stop and later Hot Streak, is seen beating up Virgil to the point where he is bruised and can hardly stand up.

We then see three other students enter the classroom, Nick Conner and his friends, Kevin and Ray. The three start mocking and teasing Jimmy, even after he tells them to stop. Not even the teacher notices Jimmy being harrassed, and Virgil has a hard time finding the courage to defend him.

However, we see things be made a little bit better throughout the episode, when Virgil, Richie, and Frieda start to make friends with Jimmy. Jimmy feels happier and more at peace with them as his friends, and we even get to know more about him. One particular thing we learn about him, is that his father has a gun, which does leave Richie and Virgil understandably uncomfortable, especially Virgil, since his mom was killed by gunfire.

But they do forgive him. After Nick catches Jimmy eavesdropping on him talking to Frieda, he gets mad and chases the poor kid. We see and hear him scratching, banging, and pleading in absolute terror to be let out. And when Virgil and the others do get him out, we see Jimmy fall to the ground, crying his eyes out, and running away. Nobody sees Jimmy for a while after that incident, not even his friends. Jimmy marches into the Community Center where Nick and his flunkies are indeed there.

Nick still attempts to pick on him, but then Jimmy pulls out a gun, easily terrifying not just Nick but everyone in the Center. Jimmy lets his guard down, but this only makes things worse as Kevin and Ray tackle Jimmy to the ground, which causes him to accidentally fire the gun. We see Jimmy curled up in a corner, crying and looking just absolutely guilt ridden, knowing that he just shot one of his own friends.

In the end of the episode, we learn everyone involved in the incident got counseling, Jimmy was sent to a juvenile detention center, and Nick and his friends were suspended and charged with community service.

Seeing someone like Jimmy, who only wanted to be left alone, get endlessly tormented and picked on with no restraint or even empathy from his tormentors, really strikes you in the heart about how sick and twisted bullying really is.

And Static Shock showcasing the scenario of what happens when someone is tormented beyond belief is very impactful. Because, yes, school shootings can be a result of bullying and mistreatment.

All in all, a very good episode that teaches several very good lessons. Still, watching someone being bullied, whether in real life, or in fictional media, is always going to be disturbing to me. In this show, we see less humor when the ghosts are on screen, and more terror. Some of the most disturbing designs in this show are the designs of Professor Pericles, the carcass of Friar Serra, the Spookified Children, and the Evil Entity Just to name a few.

Ugh, just looking at these designs is enough to make my skin crawl. And three of these villains are even more disturbing when you know their motives and what they want to do and what they are exactly. Pericles was originally part of one of the previous Mystery Inc.

Friar Serra was also a member of a previous mystery solving gang who had a Donkey named Puerto, who also betrayed his team. And finally, the Evil Entity, a manipulative, black-hearted being who only wants to destroy the entire Universe, and it can also possess living creatures, and practically absorb them.

Character deaths are also an element we see in this show. In the series finale, we see Hot Dog Water, also known as Marcie, get cornered and killed off screen. And in a previous episode, the character Angel Dynamite, aka, Cassidy Williams, was confirmed to have drowned while helping the Mystery Inc.

It has good elements that set it apart from other Scooby shows too, such as a serious story, drama, and even real supernatural elements. Well, we have seen real ghosts and monsters in Scooby media before, such as in the Zombie Island movie, this was was still another element that sets it apart from much of the Scooby-Doo scenarios from years past.

Nowadays, kids have more choice than ever when it comes to TV entertainment — not to mention more channels and streaming services to choose from. For that, parents are eternally grateful. For a lot of parents, it was one spin-off too far. With horrible characters, bland animation and no originality, there [are] no redeeming qualities to this show at all.

National and international guidelines discourage screen time for children under two years other than for video-chatting. This can happen no matter what else is going on in the story or how likeable the characters are. Preschoolers can be scared when a normal-looking character transforms into an evil one, particularly if they see the character changing. Scary images or scenes on the news can also upset preschoolers.
