Equity cartoon

This project is based on the famous cartoon of equity with the three individuals standing on top of boxes of different heights. The initial idea was to construct a physical, 3D sculpture of that cartoon near Target Field baseball stadium in Minneapolis, MN Minneapolis is the location of Mr. George Floyd's murder. Upon partnering and collaborating with Artist Heidi Jeub and social justice organization, Unite Cloud, the project invited deeper conversations and insights about the concept and understanding of equity, as expressed below. A major goal of the research and final art presentation s was to validate that equity is better for a society versus equality and provide evidence for that reasoning. Recently, the concept of equity has become a hot topic.

Servant Leadership Institute. I have to admit at this point even I am confused as the words are so closely related. But how do we describe this to students and to each other? I think the confusion in the three statements arises, even though most people are making the same point, is that the conversation does not go deep enough.

Advocating for race equity

Though often used interchangeably, equality and equity are quite different. If fairness is the goal, equality and equity are two processes through which we can achieve it. Equality simply means everyone is treated the same exact way, regardless of need or any other individual difference. Equity, on the other hand, means everyone is provided with what they need to succeed.

Years ago, I first encountered this graphic showing a visual distinction between equality and equity. It quickly started making the rounds on social media, in presentations, and even in my own presentation slide deck. But something about it never quite resonated with me. Erin and I had numerous conversations about the graphic, I even drew some alternatives with kids in deep holes. But, what Erin correctly pointed out is that this graphic is simple and easy to understand without words. I like text, so this poses a challenge to thinking about an easy-to-understand alternative.

By Carlon Howard and Robert Wilkes. If you enjoy this piece, you can read more Political Pen Pals debates here. On one end, proponents of equity-based solutions to societal problems argue that we must take into account the varied lived experiences of individuals and communities when crafting public policy. On the other hand, opponents of equity-based solutions assert this requires an unrealistic level of differentiation in services and policies, a differentiation that is almost certain to privilege certain groups over others. From this viewpoint, impartial equality should be the aim. While working towards equality is an admirable goal, this strategy can overlook the myriad circumstances that impact life outcomes.

Launched in October , Bino and Fino is a Nigerian-produced cartoon, designed for three to five year olds, about a brother and sister who live with their grandparents in an unnamed African city. Animator Adamu Waziri created the cartoon to be an entertaining, high-quality educational programme, which also shows positive aspects of Nigerian and African culture. Bino and Fino have many adventures where, with the help of their friend Zeena the Magic Butterfly, they discover and learn things about the world. The producers say they see the series to be a mix between "Dora the Explorer" and "Charlie and Lola", which, unlike many African animations, takes place in an urban, middle-class setting.
