The Final Season of the Attack on Titan anime will finally be coming to an end in third time's the charm. While the episodes have been enjoyed widely by fans across the world over the past nine years, there's been other Titan content which hasn't reached as far, including but by no means limited to the eight OVA episodes or OADs as they're technically called in the credits. Their initial releases were as single-episode DVDs bundled with special editions of certain manga volumes. However late last year, Funimation announced that they would be streaming all eight, making them much more accessible and in higher quality than the DVD versions. If you're a fully-caught-up fan of the series but haven't come across these side-stories you can probably jump right in, but the question still remains of what the best way to watch them in conjunction with the series proper would be. They were released over the course of five years after all, not to mention how they jump all over the timeline.

‘Attack on Titan’ OVA dubs finally get a release date

There are two sides of the debate, those who prefer the manga and those who prefer the OVA and everyone is welcome to their own preference. But there is one particular point that I want to drive home about this scene regardless of your preference:. He can ask these somewhat misleading questions and Levi is able to follow the logic train so that he can make the appropriate choice when Erwin asks him if he will fight for humanity.

Levi is going through an active trauma reaction here. A good page with an over view of trauma reactions can be found here. I recommend looking over it. Imagine the lowest point of your life where you can not even comprehend anything outside of your own pain and despair. And now imagine someone trying to ask you questions and to make a major life decision.

Not coherently anyway. It would at best just confuse him, at worst send him off the deep end, or even possibly push him in to a catatonic state. This is the best possible thing Erwin can say to Levi in this moment. Getting the person into a solid enough head space so they can get home under their own power is the best bet. Think of it like triaging a wound. Stabilize it until you can better address it in a safer location.

So, again, while everyone is welcome to their own preferences, I really think the animation studio did an amazing job of capturing extreme trauma and the appropriate handling of it.

While it is certainly a different interpretation of the narrative, its makes me respect both the studio and the character of Erwin a great deal more.

I actually liked the moment after that, the ending of the OVA, a lot, too. Why Isabel and Farlan died was ultimately from his decision, he was also uncertain about Lobov, and already seeing that perhaps just citizenship on the surface was not the way to freedom at all, so based on these details he decided to make the definite decision to follow Erwin.

I still love the original series and the initial run of the story before the soft reset of the manga for the camp and surprising sincerety it had for what kind of story it was trying to be. Goku already accepted and understood who he is a very long time ago and that character beat was much less heavy-handed 30 years ago.

But more than that, the story acts if this is basically a completely new thing for him and tries to make me care for this through a character Bardock which I percieve to be really uninteresting.

This is trying to build pathos. None of it works on any level, including the emotional, which is what annoys me with stories the most. It has all of the themes of Attack on Titan without most of the problems I have with Attack on Titan. There have been a few other story-based games like this for me, too. It feels like a pretty strange and pretty new way of getting attached to a piece of media.

And I feel like this is such a new kind of way to consume media because actually playing a game is so much more different than watching it being played.

The Broly movie is covered in product, but at least the fighting looks pretty and I felt sincerity in Broly and the characters surrounding him. He wants to get stronger. Again, very early on in the series Baba described Goku to be like a wild animal.

It makes him neutral. Like a wild animal and that could be interesting in itself. The anime also has distinct plotting from the manga. It would be fairly confusing to just start following the manga considering the differences between the stories in the anime and manga, so they would have to keep to stuff established in the anime, which I generally also much prefer over the manga. Aside from this they could have the much more animator-friendly Broly movie designs working in their favour.

You have some of the weirdest and most unsupported takes on Levi I've ever seen, "romanticizing his violent tendencies" while ignoring the equivalent and worse violence around him, "try to be a better person" and all this fake stuff you built up. Like sure Levi leans into violence but you built a whole fake arc because you'd rather downplay the selflessness of his character. I do think his arc is about becoming nicer and finding his actual purpose in defending the weak. He was a rough thug pre-main story.

My issues with his character really are that people so often seem to place him on a pedestal and make him perfect, idealise his character when the actual interesting aspects that make me okay with his character are either downplayed or removed.

Even after the redesign, I always felt like it still looked wierd in all of the screenshots I saw. He actually likes comic books and movies, so it makes sense he references them. Because honestly, this series can go into unpleasant uncanny valley territory really quick if the tone is handled in certain specific ways. It sort of contextualises the dated aspects of his character in a fun way.

Stemming from this…. Colours and Generations were just quips and jokes, but I think there was still some sincere fun in there. They tried to take themselves seriously in the same way everything after Generations has been light-hearted; it felt like it was really forced and unnatural.

And I think this aspect still somewhat shone through in this movie in moments, but I think it was still much more just trying to tell a story like Sonic Adventure 1 and 2 than it was Shadow, 06, Lost World or Forces, which were trying very hard to be something. In this movie, his main thing is finding a friend, but these more, maybe serious elements are executed in just the right way where they fit in without, again trying too hard to push any kind of feeling on to the viewer.

Which I never expected to say. Same Historia anon here. I would have definitely preferred a subplot where they look for Historia, as you mentioned, instead of the one we got with Connie, his mother, Falco, and Armin.

And yes. But I also wish rumbling the world was Zeke's idea first, with Eren reluctantly agreeing next, and they make the choice together. This would feel more sensible than him seeing a predetermined future fate that motivates him in chapter That kind of feels like a plot hole, considering they already tried unlocking memories that way offscreen before then, but still after the touch in the crystal cave, but got nothing out of it. And Eren could have remained wide awake and in full control of himself and in full cahoots with Zeke instead of essentially asleep and automated by Ymir Fritz or something.

The secret of the royal titan touch could have even been kept secret between those two until it first happens or something. Historia could have become the new Jaw Titan instead of Falco. Though I am also a Reiner fan and sympathize with him so well, and it would crush me emotionally to see him sacrifice himself even for such a potential noble cause.

I would also mention Annie, but she was kept absent for so long that bringing her back just to kill her off would feel like such a wasteful slap in the face. She chooses her own way to fight. And I agree with you on there being several other much more optimal ways to do this, as I said in my previous ask. So going with something she denied so strongly before is still a contradiction unless you write around it, which in this case could be the possibility of her deliberately becoming a Titan to oppose Eren and not becoming a baby machine.

I think it would still be thematically wierd, but is probably better than her being a mute baby machine. In that case, I think Porco or Pieck would definitely be the options to go with for smaller losses and you could definitely do something with this — you could even write out Falco and Gabi at this point because their arcs are basically done just a little before the Rumbling happens. In all of these options there are a bunch of details to consider, but the point would be to keep her an actual character.

Also this is an example how I think some people read Pieck pretty badly, too. The very first one in chapter 1 was just a dream. Then through wierd dreams his first memory with Frieda , then the combination of key locations and royal blood. If not a complete one, then at least a partial one. He gained the perspective he has because of the things that happened to him. The entire thing happens because of who he and every other character in the series are as characters.

And the strongest argument against this is, I think, the idea that Eren would be stronger than that. And I find comfort in Eren accepting the consequences and facing the consequences, however symbolic or empty people argue it is.

Posts Ask me anything Submit a post Archive. Analysis: Erwin and the OVA. To review, in the manga, the climactic argument between the two characters is fairly rational: Erwin: Who was it that killed my subordinates, killed your friends? Was it me? Or was it you?

Even if you had gone together with them to ambush me, do you really think they would have survived unharmed? Erwin: Enough. Do not regret. Remembering your regrets can weaken the next decision you make. And you will entrust that judgement to others. If that happens, only death awaits. No one knows the outcome of these things.

One decision becomes meaningful only when you use it as an ingredient for the next decision. We will continue scouting the walls. The creator of Yu-Gi-Oh! RIP Kazuki Takahashi. Oh no. The trailer for Lucifer and the Biscuit Hammer looks bad. The Dragon Ball Super manga really did as much of a rehashed as forced character arc for Goku.

And I really want to. Even if I would probably suck at it. But here we are. The best advertisement for the game really is apparently the game itself.

Read the newest Dragon Ball Super chapter.
