Pixar’s Luca is the Italian seaside escape you and your kids need this summer
Sea monsters that can become human when dry but change back to sea monsters when they get wet? Beautiful animated shots of the Italian Riviera? Young friendship with mild gay undertones? When the release date came, I was perfectly happy to pull open my laptop and enjoy a tight 95 minutes of friendship and fun.
Prove something to the world? Maybe a combination of all three. Moments and scenes are there to move along the relationships rather than moving a plot along.
The friendship between Luca and Alberto, however, is the real core of the film. But it is worth thinking about the implications of this film and its potential as a gay narrative.
Director and writer Enrico Casarosa in his feature-length debut has insisted that the story, based on his own experience meeting his childhood best friend, is purely based on platonic friendship.
Relationships between people sometimes change as children grow into themselves; the love between Luca and Alberto is a strong platonic love, but even if they are not explicitly gay, that does not mean they are straight. There are also layers within the film — prominent speeches about fear and acceptance, for example — that point to the possibility of the sea monsters being an allegory for queer identities, or for anyone who is perceived as different in society.
Besides, having a film about two boys who care deeply about each other without a lot of the machismo that has been normalized in society is a rare gift in and of itself. With Luca and Alberto, the nature of the relationship matters less than the strength of it — and boy, is it strong. In the interest of creating a clear divide between the good and the bad, Ercole is a classic Disney villain with literally no redeeming qualities and no character development.
They invite you into the world with a beautifully animated interpretation of the Italian coast and plenty of Italian jazz in the background. Even with touches of emotion or melancholy, the film maintains a simple, pleasant tone. And while there is a complex discourse, it only makes the film richer for those viewing it.

Set in a beautiful seaside town on the Italian Riviera, the original animated feature is a coming-of-age story about one young boy experiencing an unforgettable summer filled with gelato, pasta and endless scooter rides. The original film is written by Kemp Powers. The results were good for shareholders but middling for moviegoers. This brightly colored but dramatically flat tale is most enjoyed by a male moviegoers who b saw it before they turned 10 and c have no idea that it tells virtually the same story as the Michael J. Fox comedy "Doc Hollywood. While Lightning Owen Wilson tries to soup himself up to take on young, faster rival Jackson Storm Armie Hammer , the veteran racer mentors Cruz Cristela Alonzo , a trainer who gave up her racing dreams. It's visually sumptuous and has a few good ideas, but the "Cars" series remains Pixar's blandest. The film does provide memorable voice roles for "The Ref" co-stars Denis Leary as a manly-man ladybug and Kevin Spacey scaring the little ones as an ant-exploiting grasshopper. Leave it to Pixar to turn childhood terror into something fuzzy and huggable while also sneaking in a metaphor about over-reliance on fossil fuels.

The film is sweet, funny and full of heart. And it will no doubt will become an instant Disney classic. The teen sea monsters have the ability to transform from sea monsters to humans just by stepping in and out of the water. As Luca begins to discover what he is capable of, he must confront his insecurities and fears. His friendship with the confident and eager Alberto is exactly what Luca needs to help him step out of his comfort zone. Luca Paguro is a well-behaved and kind sea monster who is very curious about the mysterious world above the sea. It sort of gives you some Little Mermaid vibes. Which is super relatable.

I do not use that word lightly. Director Enrico Casarosa transports you to the gorgeous Ligurian zone of Italy to share this uplifting story of two friends during their early teen years. Yet this animated film is so much more. Here are my top reasons to watch Luca.
On its surface, it seems almost slight. It aims for a small canvas and appears to be a story about a couple of sea monsters masquerading as humans who hope to win a Vespa in a small post-war Italian town. Of course, Pixar is owned by Disney, and Disney is the studio that wants to do victory laps when a supporting character dances with a man. But when Luca meets Alberto Jack Dylan Grazer , a daring free-spirit who has no problem going up to the surface, Luca finds himself excited about the possibilities, especially when they start building their own Vespa. They find their chance when they come across Giulia Emma Berman , a young girl who wants to win the annual Portorosso Cup. Teaming up with Giulia, the boys see a way to the prize money that will get them their Vespa, but the more time they spend in the human world, the more it starts to strain their relationship.
