The youkai's evil aura attracts minor yokai to converge on the shrine, and Ushio makes the decision to free the tiger youkai who promises to clean up the mess. However, the tiger youkai merely attacks Ushio and gloats that it is free to devour humans once more. Outraged at the betrayal, Ushio unexpectedly channels the Beast Spear's awesome power and cows the fearful tiger youkai into helping destroy the minor youkai using its formidable strength and lightning bolts. After this unusual introduction, Ushio decides to keep the tiger youkai close by in order to prevent it from killing and eating other humans, to its chagrin naming it Tora Japanese for tiger. Tora, meanwhile, sticks around in order to find a chance to eat its tormentor. However, the act of removing the Beast Spear leads to a chain of events, ultimately drawing back to an ancient prophecy and an old and implacable enemy who has the power to destroy all Japan - human and youkai alike.

Regardless, the episode is still a ton of fun as it lays out the tone for rest of the series. After Ushio and his priest father duke it out during breakfast, Ushio finds himself dusting out the storehouse and discovers doors leading to the basement where he makes his fateful meeting with Tora. The sound design in this scene is perfect. Up until Ushio found the cellar, the tone had been fairly silly.
For one moment, we get a really satisfying shift for when we first see Tora and his enormous, menacing figure accompanied by eerie music. Jumping between tense situations and comedy is a common theme in Ushio and Tora, and is done really well.
Ushio unleashes Tora under the promise that the demon would help him get rid of the lesser demons attacking his friends, but of course, Tora takes the first swing. The first fight felt a bit too short. Even though it seems like the fish and bug demons are easy to defeat, it would have been nice to see more of Ushio in the Beast Spear form.
Still, the episode ended on a high point with Ushio and Tora vowing to destroy one another. That sounds like the path to true friendship to me! Upon meeting Ushio, Tora asks him to remove the spear as only humans have the ability to. As a thank you gift for releasing him, Tora will then eat Ushio. Meeting new friends, fighting new foes, seeing new sights, just your average day for a high school student. Ushio Aotsuki used to laugh off stories about the supernatural, especially the one about his ancestor sealing away a demon with the legendary "Beast Spear". One day, however, he stumbles across a secret doorway in his family's temple, and finds a tiger-like demon pinned to the wall by an ancient spear. As it turned out, the demon was still alive, and its evil aura drew other demons to the temple. Frightened, Ushio pulled out the spear from the demon — only for the creature to threaten to kill him. In his anger, Ushio somehow channeled the power of the Beast Spear, and forced the demon — which he named "Tora" Tiger — to bail him out.

But I was right there with you, Mayuko-chan — my reaction to that moment was exactly the same as yours even more so when I saw your reaction to that moment. And the end result was cracking stuff — so lean, so focused, every moment on-screen relevant and to the point. The fight scenes themselves were incredible, the emotion was off the charts, everything made sense within the mythology. And importantly, the big events ended early enough to allow at least a brief period of reflection — not as long as I wanted, but more than we often get from action-driven series. Previous editions of this collection have been out of circulation for a while, therefore this release is a fresh chance for fans of the anime to get their hands on the complete series. In the first half the show is lighter in terms of tone. There aren't many episodes in which the plot carries over, and the titular characters are usually concerned with fighting the monster of the week. While there is humour throughout the show, there is more of it in the early part of the show. Since the big bad hasn't appeared yet, more focus is put on how the characters react to the various challenges they face. The major villain has shown up by this point and episodes are more serious as a result.
The beast in question is Naga Tobimaru, nicknamed Tora for his tiger-like appearance, and infamous for his destructive power. When the temple comes under attack by malicious yokai, Ushio has no choice but to free Tora to save his home, with the spear being the only insurance if he gets out of hand. This chance encounter between the duo is only the beginning of their journey into the depths of the spiritual realm, as they quickly find out about a great threat that looms on the horizon that could wipe out human and yokai alike. In recent years, the action shounen genre has seen something of a renaissance.
