Gakkou gurashi season 2 episode 1

Expectations are funny things. Otherwise hit the jump for the happiest surprise of the season. This revelation colors everything that follows in increasingly darker tones, as the series bounces back and forth between survival tales and bursts of standard cute-girl silliness. Rather than feeling like inconsequential fluff, most of the lighthearted moments serve as a relief, a way to catch your breath from whatever new difficulty has been unleashed via flashbacks or current events, and the constant knowledge of what lurks just beyond the barricaded school hallway tints even the most rote shenanigans and tropes in an uneasy light. Even the obligatory swimsuit episode while laden with fanservice and nothing to write home about carries a whiff of wistfulness to it. As fascinating as School-Live was in the way it played with perspective, revealed truths, created an aura of perpetual tension, and developed its characters, where it really succeeded for me, personally, was in how it handled its central themes.

Fortunately—and impressively— School-Live does neither of these things, instead finding a careful balance between the validity of escapism and the necessity of leaving it.

Utilizing its horror setting, School-Live shows that the realities of adulthood—not just daily responsibilities like work or bills, but the greater awareness and understanding of the world beyond ourselves that comes with true maturity—can seem and sometimes are pretty frightening.

School-Live understands this and recognizes it as a valid coping mechanism. Eventually, in order to truly live, you need to face the adult world and graduate. In the end, School-Live makes a strong case for the validity of escapism—and particularly the cute-girl genre itself—without falling into the trap of idealizing it. This is a great suspense series and has some moments of genuine humor and heart, no question, but it also has something worthwhile to say and says it pretty darn well.

And any day fiction can get you to adjust your worldview is a pretty good one in my book. School-Live was, if nothing else, a reminder of why I watch every single premiere, even the ones that look downright awful on paper, because stumbling across that happy surprise is sometimes even more rewarding than when a show lives up to the hype. Reblogged this on Cain S.

Latrani and commented: While I am working on my own series recap, this one really touches on a lot of the things that made Gakkou Gurashi such a fascinating show.

Like Like. Extremely well written review of a show that, honestly, took me by surprise. Yet, this show. This freaking show. That touch of innocence that lends weight to the escapism, as well as the need to mature and become an adult really worked. It was a very narrow tightrope to walk, and while Studio Lerche had a few wobbly moments, they reached the end in spectacular fashion. Seriously, that last episode. Heart hurting, teary eyed, moment after moment.

The blurring of the lines between the nightmare reality and the comfy warm delusion Yuki lived in made everything suspect. No sense messing with a good thing. For real, this summer season is gonna be hard to follow. Ore Monogatari, Shirayuki, and Gakkou Gurashi, just to name my top three favorites, are going to make the fall season really have to work hard to impress.

Visiting the beach is a common mechanic in anime. Almost every series will feature the protagonists donning bikini and swim trunks at some point and having fun in the sand and surf, usually for an entire episode. Personally, I prefer the term mechanic. Writing is the art, but the themes, moods, emotions, and plot points are all the mechanics of the art. Certainly, some mechanics are overused, or more commonly, used in the exact same manner between many different types of fiction, across many different mediums. This is the fault of the writers, not the mechanics. As such, giving the mechanics a term that is commonly used in a derogatory manner is a convenient way of avoiding holding writers themselves to a higher standard. If you want to make a reasoned argument about tired themes, try spending a little more time learning the mechanics of writing, and a little less browsing TVTropes. The beach visit mechanic actually is a pretty well worn theme in anime. Every series, from Fairy Tail, a show about wizards fighting battles for the fate of the world, to High School of the Dead, a show about the zombie apocalypse, has found a way to incorporate a beach episode.

It is generally expected if not a courtesy for critics to warn of spoilers before discussing any story in detail, even when it sometimes feels unnecessary such as with classics acclaimed for decades. I mean it! To do otherwise would not only be a huge disservice to this critical analysis, but also deprive you as a horror fan of the chance to experience a story I cannot recommend highly enough through fresh eyes! Eventually, they meet classmate Miki Naoki and invite her to join along with the adorable dog Taromaru. But how will this innocent girl react when she faces it?

Even after five years, the popularity of the show is intact. Moreover, fans still expect Gakkou Gurashi to return for a second round.

But all her bumbling and crashing through a happy-go-lucky day, chasing after her runaway dog with her friend Miki, is but a bittersweet illusion to the horrible reality that surrounds and permeates the school. What started feeling like the OVA to a series already ended became, in just a few incredible moments, like Fight Club with feels. The fact that I became irritated at the length of the Taroumaru chase is what makes this episode a nightmare to criticise. On the one hand, that boredom meant the episode — in terms of what was in-the-moment — was largely a chore to sit through. But again, perhaps that will help us want Yuki to break out of her trance even more; by sacrificing some of this episode, Gakkou Garashi may have augmented its entire series.

Every day I can do my homework, talk to my friends, even my teachers. Gakkou Gurashi is a series I knew only a little bit prior, like the main selling point which is right in every description of the show and was when it first got announced as well: a cute slice of life with a rather unique setting — a zombie apocalypse. However, the show managed it in a way purposefully to deal with people who knew what was coming and even manga readers in a way, as apparently it was handled very differently here in a much better way and made it confusing.

Thanks for the blog, everything was done very competently. Still, stand-alone is better than livejournal and others.
