Rating: I have long outgrown the typical teenage fantasy stories that are designed to pander and lacking in any real creativity and inspiration.
This series is none of those. This is the series for the matured readers who have been searching for something new and refreshing, something that doesn't treat the readers as dumb horny kids, something with matured thinking, with MATURED adult characters thank goodness! I concur with the previous reviews.
It deserves a far higher score. I am SO glad Yasumura Youhei decided to make his own original series instead of adapting another light novel. I read his manga adaptation of Anti-Magic Academy: The 35th Test Platoon before but was not impressed - it felt like it was holding him back and doesn't fit with his personal style.
There were scenes that impressed me only to be followed by lackluster ones. However at that time I did see he has potential to do better, and it shows in The Dungeon of the Black Company. Even the art is vastly different and superior. Go buy online at BookWalker, where I discovered this gem. We owe these great authors and artists our money. I also highly recommend another similar series that I love: Delicious in Dungeon, by Ryoko Kui The community sorely need more mature and thoughtful series with artistic art like these and I think they are increasing.
Last updated on August 24th, , am. Very interesting novel that is quite fresh with a lot of twists yet it's decently funny as well. Talking about the wish for the bosses to experience some of the more horrible tortures that these guys have to offer and realize their own worthlessness as they sink into the depths of despair before completely breaking.
Well, whatever. On to the manga itself, it's pretty good. Interesting and fresh. He's a scumbag, but he's a decent scumbag with at least some bottom lines and morals.
I do wish that he'd get some more powers, but it's not that type of story, I guess he's just going to keep on struggling while trying to think up schemes.
He's not really that bright of a guy. He does have a mind for things and the knowledge on how some people think in situations like these and he's certainly no moron, but he's truly not a freaking genius either with the mental capacity of a superhuman. I guess he's just a kind of normal, hard-working guy that wants to get out of poverty and live however he wants without having to work anymore, seems it has to do with his life experiences, from flashbacks it seems that he was a poor kid and worked his arse off to get whatever he had and now he's in this company that exploits him and everyone else, so obviously that desire is just going to increase.
He might just find something else along the way that is more important I'm kind of hoping for a romantic relationship with the dragon girl later on, I'm a sucker for that stuff. The art is pretty good. I like this style quite a lot. As for the characters, the important ones feel quite full of life, all of them are interesting enough. I like the idea of bringing a modern day concept to a fantasy world to use it as the core. Unusual and rightfully so.
After all, it's hard to pull it off nicely. This author, however, did succeed decently at this. Unlike many other manga, I actually feel a bit happy whenever the mc manages to succeed at something, even if it's just something like escaping alive.
But even more so, it's a great feeling when he screws over the people at the company, making sure things doesn't go as they plan often by sheer luck, but sometimes by guts and intelligence. So, I guess I can relate to this mc quite a bit, perhaps that's why. It's both amusing and interesting to see his journey towards the assumed peak. This story has plenty of potential, I just hope that this author can utilize all of it properly.
As for now, I'm truly enjoying the journey, I hope it'll keep up this style all the way through as he gradually becomes more powerful for various reasons although not physically it seems, heh. Despite the grim world and everything horrible that happens to the mc and everyone around him, it's actually quite amusing thanks to the mc and some of his team members like the extreme glutton dragon loli that turns into a mature dragon with all the right curves when serious. While the company is annoying, it's mainly there just to provide a direction for the story, to be a convenient plot device for the mc to rise and struggle.
I love how the monsters are used instead of just killed. The mc doesn't care whether you're a monster or not, he treats everyone the same, the monsters are also perfect underlings for him and they're actually FAR less evil than the actual company he's forced to work in. There are also quite a lot of nice twists, like Be warned, this is a quite heavy spoiler which I personally see as something that will just explain how this novel seems to work Spoiler mouse over to view.
I guess that being summoned into the past of that world was to build up experience, knowledge and to pick up the dragon loli because she was summoned along with him. Oh, by the way, seems like the reason for the summoning is probably to teleport to japan later on. This series puts a twist on the popular fantasy transportation trope by making a central theme in this story the struggle of the repressed worker against the overbearing conglomerate company.
While the main character is a slothful, egoistic, vain, and conceited piece of shit, his lack of fighting ability is compensated by his proficiency to manipulate and psychologically exploit disgruntled workers - be it either friend or foe. All this creates an ironic situation: the more he tricks others in order to benefit himself, the more actual work he has to do in the form of promotions and slaving away for the company.
