The Lion King (2019) is now streaming on Disney Plus

Jon Favreau's reboot of the classic movie offers incredibly lifelike characters, but at what cost? Though Illinois is home, she now loves San Francisco -- steep inclines and all. The opening of Disney's live-action remake of The Lion King had me scratching my head. And the first glimpse of Mufasa standing watch over his kingdom, mane blowing in the wind, had me squinting to make sure he wasn't an actual lion.

Disney's reboot of the animated classic gets released on Digital HD on Friday. But they seem so realistic it's hard to tell the difference. Even the lush green backdrops, with their flowing streams, swaying trees and gushing waterfalls, look like scenes from a nature documentary.

The movie tells the story of Simba, a lion who looks forward to one day being king. But his uncle Scar also has his eyes on the throne, and his plot to overthrow Simba and his father, Mufasa, ultimately leads Simba on a journey to search for his destiny and purpose.

The live-action remake is true to the plot and music that made the animated film so memorable. In fact, it follows the original plot more closely than other reboots of Disney classics, like 's Beauty and the Beast and 's Aladdin. How do you show sadness or excitement in an animal that's designed to look, for want of a better term, real?

There are moments when characters' voices convey pain, joy or fear, but that's rarely reflected in the animals' facial expressions. Still, there are times when Simba's sadness or Scar's wrath, for example, is effectively conveyed through their eyes.

Comedy also takes a hit in the remake, directed by Jon Favreau. While the humor in the animated film felt timeless on rewatching it, I find myself laughing at the same jokes today as 20 years ago , the jokes in this release feel forced.

Some moments, like when the hyenas bicker about personal space, are clearly designed to elicit laughs, but at my showing at least, the audience seemed to force a chuckle out of a sense of obligation. We're still able to see characters like Simba as separate from the actors who voice them, and it's thankfully just as easy to become absorbed in the playful antics of Timon and Pumbaa with the added touch of Rogen's signature laugh, of course. James Earl Jones , who lends his voice to Mufasa once again, is as commanding and powerful as in the original film, maintaining our understanding and admiration for his character.

That's not quite the case with Zazu, who's voiced by John Oliver. While Oliver adds a fun touch to the character, his voice is so distinctly John Oliver that I couldn't help but feel like I was watching an episode of Last Week Tonight every time he spoke. It was quite distracting. Despite the singer's immense star power, her voicing of Nala doesn't overshadow the character, but lends an air of passion and independence that could only be delivered by Queen Bey.

Thankfully, The Lion King stays true to the passion and emotion of the music in the original. Every song in the remake, both lyrical and instrumental, effectively sets the tone throughout the film. Hakuna Matata and I Just Can't Wait to Be King are just as lively and upbeat as their animated counterparts, and it's hard not to get choked up during Circle of Life, especially as the nostalgia kicks in.

Ultimately, The Lion King's live-action rendition follows closely in the steps of its predecessor, but there's no need to mess with something so good.

After his father's murder, Simba, a young lion prince, flees his home only to have to learn the true meaning of responsibility and bravery. Meanwhile, his uncle Scar takes command of his home in Pride Rock, but his greed and lack of compassion drains the natural resources around them. Is this new Lion King better than the animated one? The optimist might think the photorealism brings something completely different to the experience. Well, call me a sceptical optimist.

The Lion King was released in cinemas in and took the box office by storm, surprising Disney and the team that had worked on it. It went on to become the ninth highest-grossing animated movie, the highest-grossing hand-drawn animated movie and 35th highest grossing film of all time. VHS tapes were burnt out from being overplayed as every 90s child asked their parents to watch it again and again, adults sang along to Elton John and Hans Zimmer's soundtrack - and attempted to sing along to Lebo M's Swahili stylings - and everyone cried like a baby for that Mufasa scene. With the remake out soon you may be wondering if you can live through all of this again, and the quick answer is yes you can. Our editorial is completely independent. That vision is to serve his majesty, the Lion King, with what can only be described as a dazzling ode to the wonders of cinematic technology. With the exception of one shot, it is completely animated — just like the film — except using a photorealistic approach that might make this edition a more appropriate release under the Disneynature label. You can call it animated, but this thing looks like one of those wildlife documentaries Disney releases every Earth Day. I can barely tell the difference, and that is the key achievement of this Lion King 2.

The original animated feature film, released in , also utilizes an all-star voice cast, including James Earl Jones who's reprising his role as Mufasa in the new film , Matthew Broderick, Whoopi Goldberg, Jeremy Irons, and Nathan Lane, among others. The story, as you probably recall, is a revamped version of Shakespeare's Hamlet set in the African Savanna and retold with wild animals. Looking to stream The Lion King before the remake hits theaters? You'll have to spend a little, but it'll be worth it.

It may be a long time before viewers can appreciate the remake of "The Lion King" as a freestanding work, instead of judging it against the original. The version was "Hamlet" plus "Bambi" on the African veldt: a childhood-shaping, Oscar-winning blockbuster, the second-highest grossing feature film of its calendar year, one of the last great hand-drawn Disney animated features Pixar's original " Toy Story " came out 18 months later , and a tear-producing machine. This remake was controversial long before it opened, mainly because it seemed to take the Walt Disney company's new branding strategy—remaking beloved animated films as CGI-dependent "live action" spectaculars—to its most drastic conclusion. It serves up the same story with different actors, different arrangements of beloved songs and soundtrack cues, a couple of original tunes, a few fresh scenes and sequences, and, of course, photorealistic animals. The latter are the movie's main selling point, so believable that one of my kids remarked afterward that sitting through the film was like watching a nature documentary on mute while the soundtrack to original "The Lion King" played in the background.

Undone has created six different timepieces with different characters that were either created by Walt Disney, or made popular by Disney. In simple terms: the watch is powered by a quartz module battery but it vibrates at a higher frequency, which is why the chronograph hand sweeps instead of ticking. The Bambi comes with a white dial and brown leather strap; the Dumbo has a light blue dial with a matching leather strap, the Lion King boasts a bright yellow dial wth an orange strap; the Peter Pan features a dark, forest green dial with a matching leather strap; the Pinocchio has a dark blue dial and a suede strap and lastly, the Tinker Bell has a sparkly black dial and a light grey leather strap.
