For one of our individual assignments, we had to write an analytical essay on one of the assigned movies. However, upon closer inspection, I propose that the film is also used by Hayao Miyazaki to comment on and critique the negative aspects of modern society and the fading of the traditional values and the old ways. At the same time, he informs and reminds the audience of the importance of said traditional values and old ways. He does this through the premise of the film and through the portrayal of the characters, the settings and the events that occur within it. Even though it is not explicitly mentioned anywhere in the film that it is a commentary on specifically Japanese society, the issue of tradition and modernity is definitely one that was close at heart to the Japanese people at the time.

After learning to control her broomstick, Kiki sets up a flying courier service and soon becomes a fixture in the community. However, when the insecure young witch begins questioning herself and loses her magic abilities. She must overcome her self-doubt to get her powers back. The themes of the story are as follows: the strength of women, the difficulty of being an adult, and loneliness.
A major theme of the film is maturity. After leaving her parents, who are supportive of her independence, Kiki has to face problems common to adolescence, such as finding a job, seeking acceptance, and taking care of herself. Just like Kiki , every other individual faces these kinds of difficulties. There are many obstacles to teens obtaining employment that we all face in our life. Fighting stereotypes that employers have about adolescents, such as poor attitudes or lack of skills, can be challenging.
Adolescence is that difficult period when carefree children grow into responsible adults. That is the goal, after all, for teens to develop into mature, productive, responsible members of the community. Another theme is loneliness. She is so close to that it is almost like a part of herself. Loneliness is complex. This theme is related to our day-to-day life, just like Kiki.
Probably, we all are suffering from loneliness, vulnerability, and isolation. First is Kiki , second is Osono , and third is Ursula. All three women are independent and strong. They have dreams, and they are doing their best, heading toward their dreams. Every challenge and hurdle that women cross takes them a step closer to their dreams, just like Kiki.
Every day we get inspired by women who stand up for themselves and their beliefs as they chase their dreams. In addition to that, every time they have fallen, they have gotten back up to chase their dreams.

Growing up there were some movies that I used to watch and vaguely remained stuck in my memories despite time weathering them away in the same way wind slowly eats away at a mountain or adulthood eats away at the hope and optimism of youth. Things happen and she winds up losing her magic for a time before regaining them in order to save a friend of hers, and the movie ends on a somewhat positive note, right? Well, that was what I thought until an analysis from the youtuber Noralities reintroduced some concepts that I had not considered due to the fact that I was barely old enough to understand the concept of taxes back then. This perspective from someone who has more analytical ability than me gave insight into just how much Kiki goes through and how her coming-of-age was not only difficult but relates to a lot of what I have gone through as well with my first career option, which was something I loved but burned out on.

I connected strongly with this film, having dealt with various moves and dramatic changes of setting. Kiki is a Bildungsroman of trying to reconcile where you are with where you come from and where you want to be. Kiki makes the journey from the familiar to the new and has her views and perceptions challenged until she is able to adapt and become a more whole agent. However, this film is really the beginning chapters of a Bildungsroman that exhibits the start of opening to change rather than the entire journey. But this is more effective in many ways. The audience is prompted to continue the development that Kiki has started by opening up to the world. This is an extremely strong element throughout the entire film that connects with many viewers and enhances the potency of her character. She is often far more comfortable around the adults of the town like Osono-san or Madame, than with the children of the city. Whenever Kiki encounters young people she chokes up and retreats inside herself.

The target this time: coming of age. Success of such things either relies on a series of stories in which the characters have a chance to grow slowly and more robustly, or a narrow focus. Again, Miyazaki chose to go with the latter. At the tender age of thirteen, Kiki decides to leave the comforts of her home and head off to train her skills. Taking along only a radio and her cat, Jiji, Kiki heads south and eventually arrives in the port city of Koriko.

Feminism and spirituality both play crucial, orbiting roles in the film, as the plot seems to revolve around rather than attack a particular objective. His film simply and joyously explores the human struggle for independence. That she happens to be a witch does not matter much to the themes, however, as Miyazaki has made a film about growing up, not witchcraft. Mother insists that her reliable broom would be a better choice over the flimsy one Kiki has made for herself. Her only facility as a witch seems to be flying on her broom, an all too common capability among witches her age. She has no special skills, unlike the fortune-telling witch she meets on her first night of travel.

Paralleling that of so many real-world teenagers and young adults, her overzealous adolescent enthusiasm to kick-start her independence with little regard for conscientious pacing foreshadows her eventual crash and burn. In order to be a good witch, I have to train a year away from home. While her determination is impressive and does, in many ways, enforce the value of a strong work ethic, her eager-to-please attitude and always-go-above-and-beyond mentality eventually begin to fray her self-esteem and drive, not to mention the hay on her broomstick.

The film has the same amount of wonder and interesting storytelling that makes the film memorable. Kiki is a thirteen-year-old witch who leaves home with her talking cat companion, Jiji. In this universe, society expects witches to go off on their own to master their powers. She ended up in the sunny seaside city of Koriko where she met Tombo , a curious but well meaning boy. The young witch came across a bakery owner, Osono , who allowed Kiki to live on her property in exchange for help with her shop. With a place to stay secured, Kiki is able to open up a service where she flies on her broom to make deliveries for customers.
