The Captain captain18 wrote, - 10 - 15 The Captain captain18 - 10 - 15 Previous Share Flag Next. The first thing about Stars is the fact that in essence, it separates into two very distinct pieces. I will start with a couple of general comments, and then review the two parts separately. First of all, I just have to get this off my chest: I hate the Stars eyecatch.

Well, maybe not hate, but certainly actively dislike it. Given the overall intensity and depth of the series, having some stars and musical notes flying around is really lame. At least the SuperS eyecatch had some cool depth-of-field stuff in it. And while overall I like the closing theme to Stars, I heartily prefer the version used in the first portion of the arc. The first arrangement has a greater resonance and I think is more emotionally evocative with respect to its theme.

Maybe too much so for its target audience, I dunno. I just wish I could find the full rendition of this version of the song. Those things aside, there are some really outstanding things about Sailor Moon Sailor Stars. For one, it has an awesome theme, and one of the best title sequences realized for any show in any genre. The music is excellent. The animation is outstanding. The depth and breadth of the characters is breathtaking and wonderful.

Especially the Seiya-Usagi relationship. And now, on with the review The first segment of the story covers Episodes and is something between a prologue to the actual Sailor Stars storyline, and either an epilogue to or an apology for SuperS, depending on your personal advocacy. Neherenia, on her way to oblivion, is intercepted by some force in space and goaded into going back for another go at Sailor Moon. Suddenly, the absent Outer Senshi are back.

Pluto is back, and as soon as we remember that Saturn was reborn at the end of the Super storyline, suddenly she's back to the same age as when we first met her. Then the ass-kicking commences. To the best of my reckoning, there is more action in these six episodes than in 38 episodes of SuperS. There's a healthy dose of mystery and claustrophobia about the characters again as the plot unfolds, an atmosphere lacking in much of the previous series.

The pairings of the Inner and Outer senshi make for wonderful character development as their styles and philosophies are brought into sharp contrast. The resolve in Saturn's voice as she confronts Neherenia is chilling, and amazingly I felt for Mamoru's plight.

The only beef I can muster is the way Neherenia is ultimately dispatched. The Senshi gather in a circle, and send her back to her childhood? Doesn't that completely fubar the entire local timeline? If she grows up with real friends, then Illusion is never attacked, Ellios is never ensnared, and in essence, the entire SuperS arc never happens at all!

How does that make any sense? Especially given that we established that if you don't have a Dream Mirror, you're not really alive, and didn't Neherenia break her Dream Mirror at Galaxia's behest?

Wouldn't it have made more sense if, when Moon brandished her staff, it had created a new Dream Mirror for her and given her a second chance that way? The second portion of the story covers Episodes and begins with a somewhat jarring hop ahead in the timeline. Without an on-screen goodbye, Chibiusa has gone back to the future, and the Outer Senshi are returned to the back burner. In a shocking move, without any explanation whatsoever, Mamoru is written out of the storyline in a most annoying way.

We see a ball of energy hit the plane he's on, and then apart from a comment from Taki right afterward, nothing for a whopping 22 Episodes. From my memories of SM-R, Pluto should have been aware that the future was being massively skewed — especially as early on in events as it happens. Beyond that, however, is the fact that it just takes too fucking long for anything to develop with the Mamoru storyline. I basically watched one episode a day, five days a week, straight from start to finish so things stayed pretty fresh in my mind, and I still had to dig around in my memory to remember what happened to him.

Stars could have spent five episodes at least working the "missing Mamochan" angle. Which is a shame, because things could have got even more interesting if both of them believed that Mamoru was gone in a permanent way. In fact, Episode , with the girl due for surgery, suffers from having to shoehorn a phage into an episode with plenty of meat to do without it.

This sort of thing was bad enough in SuperS, but it gets taken to extreme in Stars, and I wish there could have been a couple of episodes here and there where we have the intrigue of all the factions dancing close to the fire without a fruitless, useless attempt at locating a Star Seed stealing time away from the character development.

Once we hit Episode , things start really falling into place. But the storyline has spent so much precious time tossing around dud Star Seeds that other potentially interesting angles are never developed. The Kakyuu Princess is one of those angles. After the Starlights spend 20 episodes looking for her, she shows up, has a quiet moment with Seiya, and then gets killed.

She barely gets one episode of screen time! Worse, is the revelation in Episode that the enslaved Sailor Senshi could be redeemed through Crystal Power Kiss, but this again is a plot element that rewrites the whole book and that book is thrown away just one episode later! The concept of Galaxia sending several of her minions to Earth just to have them redeemed by Moon would only strengthen the otherwise mediocre Sailor Wars backstory, which could then be illustrated by stories from other worlds of other noble Senshi duped into servitude.

They basically showed up, and in five seconds they were all dead, and without even actively sacrificing themselves. Compare their deaths to the eternity of screen time that Neptune and Uranus get in their final moments.

Furthermore, the Inners get dispatched with one go, but the Starlights are better than Timex watches, as they take pounding after pounding and are left standing. That the Senshi-come-latelys were never killed is a bitter slap in the face to the girls who were companions from the beginning, dropped like old hats. It makes no sense to me how they survived, or why Galaxia let them live. Next is the fact that out of all the characters, over the course of all five Sailor Moon series, the only one who really ever seems to learn anything at all is Sailor Moon herself.

This is most dramatic from the latter half of SuperS through to the end of Stars. The interesting twist to the end of the series is the notion that everybody dies because nobody will listen to her. When the Starlights combined attacks on Galaxia, they got her attention.

If they were Senshi, then they should have Star Seeds, and they should theoretically have been restored and redeemed when Chaos was dispersed, just like Neptune and Uranus. Which reminds me, when Nyanko was partially redeemed, her good half was white. Now, to the truly irksome part of Stars.

Searching for Star Seeds is an awful lot like collecting Pure Hearts. Yeah, that sounds familiar too. Wait, that was done a long time ago.

Maybe people will have forgotten that we did that. Ultimately, Stars pushes the envelope in a lot of good ways, mostly in terms of characterization. Unfortunately, after episodes, the show began to show signs it might be about to collapse under its own canon.

As much as I would love to see a Sixth series, perhaps set three years ahead with the Inners on the verge of finishing High School and aimed a bit more adult like Stars, I have to wonder whether the show would get increasingly repetitive and how you could keep it fresh without introducing more characters like the Starlights.

The fact that Stars ended in what is nothing short of a mess is suggestive that the show was running out of steam, and packing it in may have been for the best.

Still, it was a good run, and worth watching. Tags: reviews , sailor moon. Post a new comment Error Anonymous comments are disabled in this journal. Your reply will be screened Your IP address will be recorded. Post a new comment. Preview comment. Post a new comment 6 comments.
