He does not do the various things that one might connect with an agent like gather intelligence, steal vital technology, sabotage ongoing projects or facilities, or suborn others to do the same. However, I have marked him as a freelance operative because far more often than might seem likely for someone who illegally kills people for profit, he does so at the request of governments which, for the purposes of this compendium, qualifies him - hence 'agent'. He alone decides which contract he will take from whichever government might approach him, and those government departments might be the CIA or MI6 or Mossad or a dozen other alphabet-inclined agencies - hence 'freelance'.

Golgo 13: Assignment Kowloon
Live-action adaptation of the hit manga. Golgo 13, also known by the pseudonym Duke Togo, is a professional assassin. His age and birthplace are unknown and there is no consensus in the worldwide intelligence community as to his true identity. Most of his jobs are completed through the use of a customized, scoped M16 rifle. Golgo 13 is contracted to kill Boss Goa, the head of a worldwide crime syndicate responsible for drugs, weapons, and human trafficking.
Takao Saito K. Japan Iran. Japanese English. But I ended up really liking this one! I couldn't read the credits to see which country did the behind the scenes work as they weren't translated, but acting wise it was primarily Iranian.
The story takes a while to get going as a second set of credits plays 18 minutes in and once the action starts it's shot out in the barren Iranian desert, but it has just enough of the story beats to pass as a Golgo 13 story.
It's not the liveliest or best choreographed action, but there is still suitable tension when called for and even some dark humor thrown in for good measure. For fans of the franchise only as it never reached the surreal impossible nonsense of it's source material quite enough. Before Ken Takakura became a huge star playing honorable criminals in the period ninkyo eiga or chivalry films or the more contemporary Yakuza films, he generally was stuck in bad guy hoodlum roles.
That changed with his new image but by the end of the 's the romanticism of ninkyo eigo films had begun to lose their popularity and Japan was moving into harder edged more violent films and Takakura had no trouble going back to being a bad-ass killer.
In Golgo 13 he portrays a cold-hearted professional assassin without a shred of decency or empathy within. And yet we still root for him of course. In a typical Hollywood film, this character would melt a little bit - be…. For a movie about an international assassin this was a little more boring than I was expecting. Lots of talking about who's gonna do what to whom but not a whole lot of action til the very end which I'll admit had a pretty awesome shootout and car chase.
It's too bad the whole thing couldn't be so action packed. But there are a few good actionscenes in the latter half and Ken Takakura is Ken Takakura so all is mostly well. An early 70s attempt to create a Japanese action hero a la James Bond. The protagonist is a hitman— Duke Togo!
I don't think hitman movies were a thing in the early 70s so the way he goes about his job looks really strange from the perspective of 40 years later: he does a lot of boring spy stuff like James Bond , revealing himself to be the world's worst spy in the process like James Bond —he actually checks into hotels using his real name just like James Bond!
The first two acts is all boring spy stuff, complete with a girl who of course falls in love with our hero— Duke Togo! Der ist zwar wie ein Agentenfilm aufgezogen, und beim Handlungsort Teheran kommen gleich Erinnerungen an den guten, alten Eurospy auf.
Ken Takakura is ultra-cool as Golgo Just a cold, smooth and dapper assassin. I found him better than Sonny Chiba. This adaptation is more of a slow-burn and contemplative. It's more a spy-thriller than the campy and entertaining Kowloon Assignment.
Here, Golgo is a true anti-hero. Ken Takakura is so fucking cool. This one takes a while to get going, but once it hits the half-way mark it's all action. Fun and unique Iran setting. Wish there were thirty more of these things. First of the two live action adaptions of Golgo 13 is pretty amazing. Ken Takakura stars as the lead assassin and his target is beyond impossible to get to in Iran. Once Golgo gets to his destination he is set upon instantly by the henchmen of his target, Max Boa.
The film works as a great introduction to the character, but leaves the origin completely open for the franchise down the line. Unfortunately this film only spawned one sequel, but set the tone for the anime series and films. This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth. When our esteemed leader Ross offered up a two-disc edition of Golgo 13 for review, I snatched it up almost purely for sentimental reasons. When I was a young boy, I remember seeing adverts for the original UK VHS release of this movie plastered all over magazines and comics - This was a time way before my interest in anime had developed, but for some reason the promotional ads have always stuck in my head as being 'something cool' despite having never watched it for myself and being way too young for the movie's 18 rating at the time. So, here I am, some twenty years later, to find out which of the two has aged worst - Me, or the movie? Based upon the character first seen in Takao Saito's long-running manga, Golgo 13 is the story of a mysterious professional assassin, known to most only by his codename and his fearsome reputation as the best in the business, aside from a small circle of associates who refer to him by his real name we assume of Duke Togo. Our man Golgo is your typical assassin - Calm, collected, detached, and with a prevalence to wear shades no matter how dark it is. What lies behind that calm exterior? What drives the Duke to do what he does? Money, personal issues, love? So many questions, absolutely none of which are answered during the course of the movie. Golgo 13 cares not for personality or back story, instead focusing solely on a sordid mix of violence, sex, more sex and more violence.

First off, I'll admit I'm not the biggest anime fan. I would say I'm a casual anime fan, but even then, I'm so far out of the loop when it comes to titles and franchises that I usually don't bother with them unless one is highly recommended to me. And that's exactly what happened here. Someone had posted about this on Instagram, so I took the advice and added it to my watchlist.
