Mulan (1998 movie)

Mulan is the 36th animated film from Walt Disney Pictures and is based on the Chinese legend of Fa Mulan, a woman who took up arms so her elderly father could be at peace. A mix of comedy and drama, the film follows the adventures of the girl voiced by Ming-Na Wen as she takes her place among the gathering armies to defend against the Huns, this in a time when it is illegal for women to fight. Murphy provides some genuinely funny moments as do many of the supporting characters. The law of the land requires one man from each family to enlist. Over dinner, after her father receives his conscription notice, Mulan can no longer hold in her contempt for the law and angrily denounces the matter, but is silenced by her proud father who is ready to fight, even though his age and weakened abilities will surely mean his end. Mulan rushes away, out of the house and into the garden where the evening rain soaks her to the bone.

Mulan (1998) is Still a Film ‘Worth Fighting For’

Mulan is a Disney movie that was created in Although this movie is not entirely historically correct, the content is still beautiful and meaningful. This film takes place in China during the Han dynasty. It is about a young girl named Mulan who risks her life to save China and bring honor to her family.

This film is culturally relevant to not only Asian watchers, but to strong and independent young women as well. This shows that she is very brave and that she wants to prove herself to others and make them realize that she is more than just a girl made for bearing sons. Even when she was found out and abandoned on the mountains, she never gave up. Along with Mulan, there are other characters in the movie that are lovable and relatable such as her trustworthy sidekick, Mushu.

His actions and words are not only funny but they are also very relatable. I realize this the more that I watch it. One specific scene that I would like to analyze is probably my favorite scene in the whole movie, her transition from a sweet and obedient young girl to a woman who is willing to risk her life for her family.

This scene starts out when Mulan is sitting outside in the rain which conveys her mood and she realizes that she must do something in order for her father to remain safe and alive at home. After doing so, she starts her appearance transformation and cuts her hair short enough to put into a small man bun which was the proper hair style for the recruits in the Chinese army.

The transitions are seamless and connect beautifully with the scenes that it follows. When the movie shows Mulan, the coloring and image of the scene is light and beautiful but whenever the focus was on the villains, the Huns, the atmosphere is very dark and has ominous music in the background. The transition from the Huns to when the movie first introduces us to Mulan is very light-hearted and makes our anxiety disappear as the sweet girl with no worries appears on screen.

Every action seems to be explained and there is a clear map of the story from beginning to end. Your email address will not be published. 24 Mulan animation movie facts ahead of the remake's release

Jettisoning the saccharine cutesiness, in-jokery and overt merchandising opportunities of recent Disney outings, Mulan serves up the sort of classic entertainment the Magic Kingdom was built on: stunning animation, sharply defined characters, a smattering of catchy tunes all seamlessly woven into a simple, powerfully told yarn. Ironically, by harking back to its semi-serious dramatic roots, the studio's 36th feature length cartoon may suggest the future for its animated output. Based on traditional Chinese legend, Mulan sees the eponymous teen rebel, unable to fulfil servile wifely duties, attempt to save familial blushes by dressing as a man and becoming a war hero in the battle against the Hun. Aided by obligatory and completely superfluous comic sidekicks - a cricket and a jive talkin' dragon Murphy, desperately aspiring to Robin Williams' Aladdin genie - our plucky heroine hooks up with the motley ranks of the Imperial Garrison: cue basic army training including likeable comedy song I'll Make A Man Out Of You , Mulan's attraction to dashing Captain Shang and some stunningly staged skirmishes with the bad guys - all the while Mulan trying to keep her female identity secret. While brimming over with 90s concerns - raising issues of female empowerment, women in the military, cross-dressing - Mulan rarely loses sight of its timeless folklore quality.
