The story this time isn't a retread of a familiar Western children's classic, but based on a Chinese folk tale about a plucky Chinese teenage girl who disguises herself as a boy to fight the invading Huns. When the invaders and their implacable leader Shan-Yu who looks alarmingly like Karl Malone sweep down on the Chinese Wall, the Emperor calls up all able men to defend the kingdom. Mulan's father is old and feeble, but throws away his crutch to volunteer.

Back in , Mulan was something pretty special. Disney has come a long way since then and, looking back, the template for these films is obvious, but Mulan is still a very enjoyable watch.
Fa Mulan Ming-Na Wen disguises herself as a man to fight in a war against the invading Huns in the place of her injured and ageing father. With the help of the devoted family guardian Mushu Eddie Murphy she seeks to bring her family honour. Mulan hits a lot of points on the Disney Renaissance checklist. You can check off a clumsy outcast as a protagonist, highly merchandisable animal sidekicks and a stunt cast star comedian straight away.
The 90s Disney features paid particular attention to varying their art styles and taking influence from whatever culture their given stories were drawing from. Just as Hercules references Greek pottery designs, Mulan often looks like a Chinese watercolour painting in motion, the colours rich and the lines confident and defined. Brutal warfare is admittedly an apt metaphor for gendered societal oppression — Mulan gladly rides into battle in place of her father rather than surrender to the subservience of marriage in Ming Dynasty China.
Mulan may not be as groundbreaking as it was in the late 90s, but it still holds up for the most part thanks to its visual flair and well-judged vocal performances. If the remake is going even bigger, drawing on historical epics and Wuxia films to bring this timeless tale to life for a new generation across the world, it could be something very special indeed.

Singer and voice actress Adassa, who voices Dolores in the film, made comments about what was next for Encanto in a recent Instagram Live that left fans feeling excited. While talking about the animated film, she said that Encanto was "preparing for its next amazing phase". The clip from the Instagram Live was shared on Twitter, and fans were sent into a meltdown.

Looking back now, I can see that avoiding the film had a lot to do with how I was navigating my own identity at the time. I wish I liked it more than I did. Based on the legend of Chinese warrior Hua Mulan, the animated classic tells the story of a young woman struggling to reconcile who she is and what her family expects her to be. I was looking forward to finally seeing for myself what the fuss was all about. The earlier scenes in the film are the most relatable. As a person who grew up queer in a partially immigrant household, that weight of trying to meet family expectations — especially tied to the notions of duty and honor — is something very familiar. I had expected at least some of the Asian-inspired elements to feel a bit dated, and there are indeed characters and motifs that come off as more offensive caricatures than anything else. In doing so, she proves that women can be just as strong, intelligent and competent as warriors as men, if not more.

Disney's Mulan is regarded as a very progressive animated story, winning fans over globally with its retelling of the Chinese legend of a female warrior who masqueraded as a man in the Imperial army to save her father from duty. The movie also spoke to equality with the message that a woman could protect the kingdom and her Emperor as well as a man. Seeing as Mulan was so beloved, it's no surprise that just like The Jungle Book , The Lion King and Aladdin , there'd be a lot of scrutiny as to whether or not the live-action remake could tap into, recapture or surpass the magic of the original.

My concept of a "family film" is a movie that can be enjoyed by viewers of all ages: undiscriminating young children, teenagers with short attention spans, and adults with somewhat more refined standards. Unfortunately, too often Hollywood equates a "family film" with something aimed at the under crowd. While Disney's live-action pictures have often fallen victim to this approach, the corporation's animated features have remained largely exempt although it's possible to argue about how widespread Hercules ' appeal is. Mulan , Disney's 36th animated movie, continues this trend.
