Cowboy Bebop went out with guns blazing in a bullet-riddled finale that pitted Spike against his nemesis Vicious — and offered a fun little nod to anime fans, too. A blood-soaked Vicious offers a toast to himself as the new head of the Syndicate — after he slaughtered everyone else — and he thinks Julia has been plotting against him, too.

During the search, Faye spots an ad for a retro suburban development called Greenacre Avenue, and it triggers a memory of her childhood home. She scans old home videos to confirm — and now she thinks she knows where she grew up. She shares the exciting news with Jet, and he promises to help, but first, they have to find Spike. Spike admits he used to be a Syndicate hitman, and an enraged Jet stuffs him in his car trunk, happy to hand the liar over to a bunch of murderous thugs.

Faye tries to talk Jet out of it, and when he refuses, she lets him go it alone. Uh-oh… our Bebop crew is fracturing fast. Jet drives up to an empty dock to meet Vicious, who has little Kimmie in tow. When Jet tries to shoot Vicious, though, the bullet passes straight through him.

Spike returns to the church, where he guns down a few more baddies before getting ambushed by Vicious wielding a katana. Spike has only a wooden chair leg to defend himself, and they battle back and forth until Spike gets his hands on a gun, and they freeze, locked in a deadly stalemate. Vicious finally stabs Spike through the shoulder, and Spike shoots him through his shoulder, but the gun goes flying, and Vicious uses his katana to flip it to himself.

She puts a single bullet into a gun and spins the chamber, pointing it at his head and pulling the trigger… but it just clicks. She has a big bounty for Spike to collect — if he ever wakes up. Click here to subscribe.

‘Cowboy Bebop’ Canceled by Netflix After One Season

Warning: This article contains spoilers for Cowboy Bebop. Netflix's Cowboy Bebop has had a divisive reception due to some of the changes made to the story, but changes to the first episode miss out on what could've been excellent foreshadowing for Julia's new ending. The overall story is ultimately a tragedy with some almost Shakespearean qualities, with flawed heroes caught up in power struggles larger than they are, with a cathartic and controversial ending. In both versions, the very first episode gives a taste of the themes which run through the entire series. Differences made to the live-action adaptation, however, both strengthen and weaken that foreshadowing. In the original anime, Cowboy Bebop episode 1, "Asteroid Blues", acts as a simple introduction to the central two characters, Spike and Jet, as well as the crime syndicates and their drug trade, but it also holds a deeper meaning. This story is adapted in the remake , and their story bears an eerie similarity to that of Spike and Julia. In the anime, Katerina seems more like a victim than a criminal, ultimately realizing that she'll never be able to live the life she wants and shooting Asimov herself before being gunned down by the police.

'Cowboy Bebop' Canceled: Why the Netflix Show Is Ending After One Season

That's a pretty keen explanation of the series, which hit the streamer over the weekend, more than two decades after the original program premiered. This new iteration which takes influences from genres like film noir, cowboy western, sci-fi space adventure and throws them all in a blender stars John Cho, Mustafa Shakir, and Daniella Pineda as Spike Spiegel, Jet Black, and Faye Valentine—a trio of bounty hunters or "space cowboys," if you will who venture out on various adventures together with Ein, their trusty Corgi friend, aboard their spaceship the Bebop , while equally attempting to reconcile their own personal traumas, along the way. This narrative foundation sets the live-action series on similar ground as the original series, allowing for easter eggs, familiar characters, and recognizable episodic plot points to come through—albeit in a new framework that allowed this new version to be faithful of the iconic story where it needed to and to pivot into unexpected directions to keep things feeling fresh. The "mash-up of a retelling or a reimagining" concept came through in a multitude of ways, most notably in the Season 1 finale where a huge story twist revealed completely different fates for sociopathic Syndicate member Vicious Alex Hassell , and his tragic femme fatale-style girlfriend Julia Elena Satine than what befell them in the anime 23 years ago. Cowboy Bebop gives a lot to the audience in its episode run, that it could be a bit of a head-spinner to keep track of all the pertinent story details hurdling through the galaxy.
