If the aforementioned Flash story was the feel-good version of heroes learning from one another, this is the uber dark, Christopher Nolan-esque spin on that concept. The stories feel different enough in terms of scope and aesthetic. Some stories don't land as well as others, and that hurts the book overall. A Good Nights Sleep Worth?
Ray: After all the stories wrapped up last month, this issue is a one-off featuring four tales of Batman teaming up with heroes and villains. Do they deliver? Freeze to aid him with a potentially apocalyptic cryogenics experiment. Fish are being poisoned by the toxins, large schools are disappearing, and while Mera is enraged, Arthur is willing to work with Batman to find the answer. It has maybe a bit too many concepts in one short story, but the art is spectacular.

In each episode, the Riddler poses a collection of clues that Batman and Robin have to decipher. In this episode, Nygma is a computer programmer, who invents a game called Riddle of the Minotaur. Two years later, Nygma kidnaps Mockridge, leading Batman and Robin to become involved in the case. This results in Nygma leaving the Dynamic Duo two riddles, which lead them to take part in a real-life game of Riddle of the Minotaur. The solution to the riddle is a location. The Wasteland is the name of a club owned by Daniel Mockridge. It is also a dead end in Riddle of the Minotaur. This leads Batman to deduce that Mockridge will encounter a trap at his club — which he does. It is in The Wasteland that Nygma kidnaps his former boss. Mockridge is being held captive in a real-life recreation of the game, which is set out like a maze.

This September marks the twentieth anniversary of Batman: The Animated Series , and the birth of the shared DC animated universe that would eventually expand to present one of the most comprehensive and thorough explorations of a comic book mythology in any medium. Batman: The Animated Series always did a great job with villain origins. Heart of Ice gave us the best Mister Freeze story ever told, The Clock King made the eponymous third-stringer a credible threat and Mad as a Hatter reimagined the Mad Hatter as a deeply tragic figure. I love the way that the show animated the Riddler as a character. Arguably more than even the Joker, the Riddler is a decidedly old-fashioned cartoon character.

The Riddler is one of the fiercest foes in the rogues' gallery of the Dark Knight. The villain has brought Batman and the heroes of Gotham to their knees numerous times, be it in the panels of Batman: Zero Year or War of Jokes and Riddles. While introduced to readers as Edward Nygma aka E. Nygma, a name filled with riddles and puns, Nygma was later renamed Edward Nashton following the consequences of Crisis on Infinite Earth.

Eisner winning long-term Batman writer Tom King has partnered with artist Mitch Gerads to deliver the Riddler's One Bad Day, part of a new "definitive" series of 64 page one-shot comics featuring several Batman villains including Two-Face, Penguin, and more. The One Bad Day name is a reference to The Killing Joke , one of the most famous one-shot comics of all time featuring perhaps the darkest version of The Joker , in which he says "all it takes is one bad day to reduce the sanest man alive to lunacy". Batman's rogues gallery is generally considered the best in comics, although one can certainly make persuasive arguments in favor of Spider-Man, the Fantastic Four, or even the Flash's rogues. The problem with Batman's most recognizable baddies, however, is that some of them struggle to measure up as a credible threat, especially for a hero of Batman's caliber think the Mad Hatter or even the Penguin. Before Hush , the Riddler served as a prime example of a villain who seemed less like a formidable foe for the Caped Crusader, and more like a novel nuisance.
