What is hope? To want something to happen or be true. To desire with expectation of obtainment or fulfillment. Hope can be a common feature of the human condition along with other attributes. Human beings can put hope in things such as religion, government, education, money, family, love, success and friends. That hope can serve as the motivation they need to face life events in order to propel their selves forward even in the face of obstacles and absolute failure.

That same hope makes it easier to make sacrifices in the name of achieving whatever set goals. Those sacrifices can include time, money and relationships.

Hope can also make a setback easier for a person to accept within the paradigm of enough hard work being able to make all dreams come true. Hope makes those individuals believe the sacrifices and setbacks are worth the pain because they expect all those events to bring them closer to the fulfilling outcomes they want.

That prelude gives the audience a peek inside the world of Spike Spiegel. Monochromatic shades of blue fill his world. As the sequence plays out, he buys a bouquet of flowers and drops one of them in a puddle on his way to his destination. The fallen rose gains brightness in its colors against the backdrop of monochromatic blues as the scene zooms in on the flower and shows clips of a gunfight. During the deadly gunfight, Spike uses his bouquet as a cover up for his gun.

The presence of roses and guns could imply romantic love and death were significant parts of his life at that time. Those shades of blue can symbolize the sadness he relates to this part of his life. The story takes place in the low income areas of the humid Tijuana. Children are stealing bread from shops. People are lying outside on the sidewalk in the blistering heat. Old run down bars. The outlaw couple, Asimov and Katerina, escaped to this place from the crime organization The Syndicate with vials of the stolen drug Bloody-Eye.

Their paths cross with the bounty hunter Spike during their run from the big crime organization and law enforcement. Most of the characters are doing things with the expectation of a particular outcome for themselves. The bounty hunter Spike expects more for the work he puts in capturing criminals.

During the scene with his partner Jet Black in the beginning of the episode, he expresses frustration with the preparation of his food: bell peppers and beef without the beef. He expects to get full meals for turning in bounties but Jet reminds him of the reality of how his inclination to violence affects their financial status. Jet provides examples of how most of the reward money from their bounties goes towards paying for property damages and injuries to law enforcement officials.

Jet contrasts with Spike in this way because he wants enough money to afford more food but he is realistic about how certain choices limit their reality. Therefore he willingly accepts that he can only cook bell peppers and beef without the beef. Spike still believes he deserves full meals and hopes that the Asimov bounty can allow them to have beef with their meal. So he spends the episode looking for ways to satisfy his hunger by pursuing Asimov for his bounty money.

Asimov uses the Bloody-Eye drug as a solution for his insecurities. Asimov and his girlfriend Katerina are introduced as criminals selling the Bloody-Eye drug to raise enough money to start a happier life on Mars. The first hint to his truth begins with their drug deal in the bar. When the outlaw couple first arrives in Tijuana, he wastes no time demonstrating the benefits of the combat enhancing drug for a potential customer. He injects the drug in his eye and he begins to see the world in red as the drug takes effect.

During that sequence, he has a grin on his face as he fights and kills Syndicate members. Asimov takes fulfillment in being able to dispatch the Syndicate members so easily.

Because the drug allows him to be someone of power for a short period of time, he willingly overlooks the physical cost of the drug such as blood shot eyes, sweats and deep breathing.

He shows no concern for the ruined drug deal or his lover Katerina due to his obsession with the drug. His first encounter with Spike shows how much the drug validates him. While Asimov is still under the influence of the Bloody-Eye drug, he takes joy in strangling Spike from behind and taunts him about questioning his worth.

He takes the moment to assert his power over Spike and his appearance as a person of value. Asimov never discusses how the Bloody-Eye drug fulfills his need to feel confident with his girlfriend. He keeps the thrill and the negative side effects to himself. Katerina wants to get to Mars to live a happier life with her boyfriend Asimov.

She believes selling the stolen Bloody-Eye drugs will get them there. Her dream is what is driving their decisions during the episode.

When she is waiting for Asimov at the ship area with Spike, she shares her optimistic dream of a life on Mars. She mentions the idea that people are happy there.

Spike challenges this hope by mentioning the importance of money there and reminds her of their reality as outlaws on the run from the law.

The getaway scene is where her hope begins to crumble until she has nothing left. Katerina and Asimov are outrunning the Syndicate members and the police cruisers. As Katerina runs to their getaway ship, she is grazed by a bullet that slits her dress and allows vials of the Bloody-Eye drug to fall out. She does her best to pick them up and gets inside the ship with Asimov.

Asimov shows more concern for the drugs than her safety by threatening her about the importance of the drugs. That moment she starts questioning the behavior of her lover and the reality of their situation. When she sees police cruisers blocking the toll gate to Mars and the worsening effects of the drug on Asimov, she finally accepts that Asimov cares more about his drug addiction and that they will never make it to Mars.

She had been carrying the hope for their future alone. The dissolution of her dream leads her to no longer have meaning to go on. She kills her lover on the ship to free him from his drug addiction and spares him from the oncoming onslaught from police cruisers. Katerina faces her impending death alone. The police cruiser ships shoot their ship to threads. As she dies in space alone, all the drug vials flow out of her dress and she is freed from carrying the burden of hope alone.

There is a common thread linking the experiences of the hungry bounty hunter, the insecure criminal and the loving girlfriend. They all want a certain outcome but that one thing they love keeps stopping them from getting it. That thrill limits him from getting more money for food though. Katerina suffers the most though from her situation because she wants a happier life on Mars but her relationship holds her back. She realizes in her final moments that her hope led her astray by allowing her to believe a happy ending was possible for her criminal boyfriend and herself.

Hope keeps these characters moving forward but that same hope leads them to the opposite outcome of what they want. It is harder for these characters to move forward without the presence of hope because that hope gives their life meaning. All they can do is grieve that loss alone in the end.
