Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot instantly won the hearts of fans when it was first released in , since then Bandai Namco and CyberConnect2 have treated fans to a stream of amazing DLC content. Dragon Ball is the epic story of Goku and the Z warriors as they protect Earth from powerful villains throughout the universe.
Sold as an extra DLC pack on the Playstation and Xbox versions, fans are really lucky to have the hefty extra content included. Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot boasted a stunning cel-shaded aesthetic that was a glorious spitting image of the anime. The power of the Playstation 4 and Xbox One really allowed the visuals to shine, through the use of the Unreal Engine 4. So one of my first thoughts, when I heard it was coming to the Switch, was, how it would look and run?
Safe to say it runs really smoothly, I did encounter some frame drops when facing multiple enemies, but that was few and far between. The game also looks great playing dock mode, fans will have a hard time spotting the difference between this and the original version.
While playing undock mode, fans will notice slight hits in quality like jagged lines. One of the first new additions to this version of Kakarot is that players can now select the difficulty settings in the game. This is great because some of the enemies had really easy attack patterns to follow, so hopefully, this will add that extra bite they need. Some fans may be sceptical, thinking they're going to be playing through the same story again, however, there are lots of new story elements from the get-go that will keep series veterans gripped.
There are also new sub-stories where players can fight as Vegito and Gotenks outside their story moments. Kakarot may not have a fully open-world but there are many open areas, which are separated by timeline events and different planets. There will be chances to expand these areas by levelling up or learning the right attacks. In these open areas, you will have the chance to take part in other fun activities.
Fishing with an attached Sayian tail is fun and earns you ingredients to cook stat-boosting meals and even full-course meals. There are many other activities to discover. Players will be able to collect Z orbs of different colours, which can be used to upgrade stats and learn new moves. As new characters are encountered, their community emblems can be collected.
These emblems can be placed on one of seven community boards. Each board requires the player to have met the community leader before being able to be used. Finding the right combination of emblems and boards will grant your characters extra stat boosts and buffs. As the name, Kakarot would suggest, players would instantly play as the main character Goku also known by his Saiyan name Kakarot.
But there are a surprising amount of playable characters in the story, each with their own skill tree and move set. Certain team combinations will allow players to perform extra special attacks. In addition to this, certain characters will be able to transform and receive stat buffs from them. These transformations can be crucial to your battle strategy, helping your characters dish out more damage or reduce how much they take. But for newcomers having the DLC included is great value for the price of this version and it increases the adventure by a good few hours, plus fans can also look forward to the Future Trunks DLC.
