Ultimate Cartoon Quiz Questions and Answers

The first woman to write an animated Disney feature was also the first woman with a sole writing credit on a billion-dollar blockbuster—and, if you were born in the 80s, probably the woman who shaped your childhood as much as your own mother. This weekend brings Alice Through the Looking Glass , her first sequel, and next year marks another huge landmark: the live-action adaptation of Beauty and the Beast, based on the characters she created more than 20 years ago.

We caught up with Woolverton to talk about her thoughts on Emma Watson as Belle, her record-breaking career, and some of the burning questions about Beauty and the Beast and The Lion King that the Internet just can't let go of. Vanity Fair: When did you first fall in love with film and writing? And which came first? Linda Woolverton: Well, I always loved film. I never actually dreamt of screenwriting. I knew that I loved film from watching those two movies—which still rank as my favorites—but I fell in love with writing when I just needed it as a young child as a place to put my feelings and my emotions.

I would sit up at night and read—and write love poems to my dog. I love that! So, for you, was writing always more personal than it was academic? Oh, always. I never even dreamed I would be a screenwriter. I really wanted to write books for young adults. And you did! Yeah, I did! And my big dream, my big fantasy, was to go to the library or a bookstore and listen to two people who had read one of my books talking about it from the other side of the aisle. That was my fantasy.

I have! But now they have the pick and choose of anybody they want. You were the first woman to write an animated feature for Disney— Beauty and the Beast —that was also the first animated film ever to be nominated for best picture at the Academy Awards. Both are enormous firsts. What did it mean for you to break down barriers both for women and animation with one project? For me, unbelievable. The first thing I ever really wrote was nominated for best picture. It was hard to even comprehend, honestly.

We really had no idea that Beauty and the Beast was going to be the groundbreaker it became. Was it difficult being the first woman to work on a film in a studio that had only previously hired male writers?

Yes, I have to say it was. I was brought in from the outside. The story department really created the movie before Jeffrey came in, so I was not looked on with kindness. It was really hard. I was really close with Howard Ashman, and we really believed that we were doing something that was really positive with this arc of the Disney heroine.

She was proactive. I believed in that, and so there was a higher purpose. I just muscled through. I was not popular. Can you answer that one for us? It probably was her dress. As one of the writers, what do you think?

I wrote it as two young lion cubs that were friends. But I never in my mind thought of Simba and Nala as brother and sister. By Katey Rich. By David Canfield. By Richard Lawson. So another groundbreaking moment you had was being the first and only female screenwriter with a sole writing credit on a billion-dollar film, for Alice in Wonderland. Did having a box-office success of that caliber change your life in any way?

Luckily I had my career rolling. More than my life, it changed the perception of what a family-oriented movie with a female protagonist could accomplish. It proved that movies with women at the center could make money. Beauty and the Beast will have a live-action adaptation next year. What will it be like for you to see Belle come to life, as portrayed by Emma Watson, after all these years?

I absolutely think she is amazing and a perfect Belle, really. I thought it was a great casting choice. Well, I think Belle is really the most like me. I was a reader. How would you describe the feeling that you get when you attending the premiere of one of your films? I remember when we premiered Beauty and the Beast in Florida, they built the little town for part of the premiere event at Disney World.

And I walked through the little town itself and I just started weeping as I began walking through the little street where Belle had walked. By Janell M. By Jennifer E. By Emily Jane Fox. By Emily Kirkpatrick.

The release of Jon Favreau's live-action take on The Lion King has also reinvigorated interest in the original film, prompting a number of questions that not even the wisdom of Rafiki could ever hope to answer. Are Nala and Simba related? Why does Scar have a British accent in the African savanna? And how did Simba survive eating just bugs for so long? Questions like these have bothered obsessive Disney fans for the better part of 25 years and for most, there's no easy answer. However, there is one particular mystery that we can solve for you now which revolves around Scar and his villainous namesake. No one is born with a scar over their eye like that, so how did Simba's uncle first come by that name?

With this new (and peculiarly faithful) version of The Lion King, however, the question is not whether a “live action” remake can improve on.

Is the new Lion King live-action or animated? That’s the wrong question.

For most of us, The Lion King was an important part of our young lives. Simba is the son of the powerful and beloved King Mufasa. He is an honored prince who is far from danger, as he grows up in a very caring family and a protected environment. But his happy days turn into tragedy when his cunning and evil uncle, Scar, murders his father and influences Simba to think that the tragedy was a fault.

Food was scarce at Pride Rock, so she needed to hunt further from home. Timon and Pumbaa are inspired by the "brains and brawn" trope. This trope is found in many other shows and movies, not just Ren and Stimpy. In the real lion world, male lions can have dark manes, some of them even turning black, due to age or genetics. However, Scar was Mufasa's younger brother, and Mufasa doesn't have a darker mane so most viewers conclude that Scar was given a black mane so as to distinguish him as the evil lion, rather like the bad cowboy always wearing a black hat. In actuality, Scar and Mufasa were not originally designed to be related.

So the movie is in English, which makes sense because it was made for an American audience and whatnot.

The Lion King: The Seven Standards of Disney

The release of a new 'Lion King' film has reignited the long and tangled royalty battle surrounding "The Lion Sleeps Tonight. Three years ago, when Disney announced a remake of its animated classic The Lion King , it was easy to be skeptical: With the original still so beloved, was an upgrade even necessary? But at least one family in South Africa was hopeful. The soundtrack album broke into the Top 20 on the Rolling Stone Top album chart. Nothing in the situation is unlawful: The contract between Disney and the Linda family was finalized, and the family has no legal right to continue receiving royalties. Disney declined to comment on the record for this story.

Zazu says this to Scar , in reference to Mufasa, after Scar intentionally skipped Simba's anointing ceremony on Pride Rock. It's probably safe to say that most kids watching in the mids had absolutely no clue what a hernia was. And if you're still unsure, it's when an organ or piece of soft tissue pushes through a tear in the muscle or tissue surrounding it. When Zazu and the young lions are trapped by the hyenas in the elephant graveyard, Shenzi refers to him as "Mufasa's little stooge.
