Why do animators keep turning people of color into animals?

It's kind of rare to find an animated film that critics like more than general audiences do. These movies are often aimed at families and tend to be lighthearted fun rather than something to be taken seriously. Of course though, a handful of these films have managed to somewhat split reviewers and moviegoers. Many of them have Rotten Tomatoes scores that make them 'fresh' yet their ratings from everyday film watchers on IMDb are a fair bit lower.

That doesn't mean the fans gave them completely low scores, just that they often point to a movie that isn't as great as critics believed. The Wallace and Gromit series is one that is beloved and has been met with widespread acclaim throughout history. So, the idea of Nick Park making something new had fans excited and again, the reviews for Early Man were pretty strong.

Set in the Stone Age, the film follows a tribe as they come together to compete against invaders in a soccer match. The premise sounds pretty wacky but it's the kind of thing Park is good at. That's why critics adored it though some viewers found it rather forgettable. There's a certain aesthetic to Tim Burton movies that make them easy to spot as soon as you see them. Frankenweenie is another in his long line of films, acting as both an homage and a parody of the iconic Frankenstein story.

Frankenweenie sees a young Victor use electricity to bring his dog back to life, prompting others to try the same thing, leading to utter chaos. Although audiences only found it to be solid, critics gave it sparkling reviews and it was up for the Best Animated Feature Academy Award.

It's kind of easy to forget but the Shrek films were a massive deal when they first arrived in the early s. Critically acclaimed and box office blockbusters, it makes sense that they would spark a spin-off or two, with Puss in Boots arriving a decade after the first Shrek movie. After the titular character debuted in Shrek 2 , his solo movie acts as a prequel that explains his origins and life before meeting the ogre.

Critics found it to be a fun adventure though audiences were more mixed about it. Still, it led to a successful Netflix series.

These days, it feels like more animation studios are becoming prominent and making waves in the genre. Gone are the days when Disney was dominating the scene. Missing Link , from the folks at Annapurna Pictures, is proof of that. Even so, casual viewers clearly weren't as enamored with it as the critics. They were attempting new things and had a few hits but most of the movies received mild acclaim or box office returns and even some of the best ones have been forgotten.

The story is heartwarming as it follows a dog who believes he has superpowers as he attempts to find a way back to his loving owner. Most of the reviews were pretty strong, saying the film was funny and used the toys it's based on well but it just didn't live up to what the original pulled off. It wasn't viewed as a fresh movie though still considered 'fresh' on RT by critics and audiences agreed, though they seemed to like it less.

Reviews were sparkling for Teen Titans Go! To The Movies as it gave fans of the Teen Titans animated series a film adaptation to fall in love with. It didn't gross much at the box office and was overlooked among animated superhero movies that year by Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse. Despite that, it should be fondly remembered as it holds an impressive Rotten Tomatoes rating, getting rave reviews for the comedy, animation style, voice acting, and writing.

Again though, it was overlooked by many which might explain the lower IMDb score. Speaking of movies that get overshadowed by a similar film released in the same year , there's Antz. This DreamWorks Animation Studios picture came out at the same time as A Bug's Life from Pixar, which was a bigger hit and is remembered by more people.

Antz shouldn't be totally forgotten though as it was praised for the voice acting and how it appealed to an older audience. It's a formula that worked in a lot of ways but some viewers apparently felt the film kind of peaked at just being good and never being great. The Diary of a Wimpy Kid franchise has been around longer than you probably realized and took the form of several movies over the years. Based on a book of the same name, this iteration acted as a reboot for the series and took things to an animated realm.

The story of the ambitious Greg Heffley struggling through middle school was relatable but it didn't land with casual audiences and even critics weren't blown away by it.

It's almost a given that something from the minds of Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg will be geared towards older viewers. That's even the case in animation as Sausage Party is a raunchy comedy that fits with the rest of their history. Sausage Party is about anthropomorphic food who are horrified to learn what humans have planned for the groceries they buy.

The idea is fun and led to some wacky moments that critics seemed to appreciate a lot more than the viewing audience. He has written in the past for various websites covering movies, TV, pop culture, sports, and wrestling. By Kevin Pantoja Published Jun 03, Share Share Tweet Email 0.

In spite of its oddball missteps, Netflix’s Over the Moon is a luminous adventure

Obviously, this is the sequel to Fun in the City , which is a film I didn't like so it's fair to say my expectations were low. So, you could say I wasn't disappointed, as it met my expectations. It was awful! It was so awful, I'd rather not spend any more time on it by talking about it. But, that wouldn't be a film review and I think I owe you all a review to save you wasting your money going to see it.

The Best Animated Movies on Netflix

Imagine a world where the most high-profile animation awards were selected by individuals who had neither working knowledge nor appreciation of the animation art form. In this world, a voter would pick the best animated short based solely on whether the film contained a dog in it or not. And when it comes to animation, the series might be more aptly titled Brutally Ignorant Oscar Ballots.
