In fact, this movie is the third-highest grossing movie in Japanese box office history, for good reason. Each of his films expertly melds adult themes, gorgeous visuals, and the joys of childhood and discovery. On her way to visit her sister, a pair of soldiers harasses Sophie. She is saved by the mysterious Howl Takuya Kimura, Christian Bale , a dashing wizard rumored to eat the hearts of beautiful women. The Witch finds Sophie at the hat shop and places a curse on the girl, turning her into a year old woman Chieko Baisho, Jean Simmons. Sophie travels to the Wastes to hide her new form from her mother and seeking to lift the curse.

In the book, Sophie was released from the spell by Calcifer as part of the deal they'd made. In the movie adaptation, her appearance varied.

Why did Sophie’s age keep changing in Howl’s Moving Castle?

I had so much to share about the Ghibli film that I decided to break it into two parts. As you can tell, my last post on the movie was already long enough. I think he did a great job, delivering a Howl that is more suitable for the Western audience. I thought Takuya Kimura did a great job, too, voicing a Howl that better connects with the Asian audience. All my Asian friends really like the movie. I read and heard that some Japanese viewers hated his voice acting. I remember a Japanese classmate I once knew who deplored his role in the movie, too. In fact, in my opinion, Chieko Baisho sometimes even looks a bit like Sophie, especially the Sophie in the beginning of the movie. Emily Mortimer was also prefect for the role, too!

Maybe it was because the first examples of it I was exposed to were Pokemon and Dragon Ball Z , both seemed like a silly excuse to sell toys to elementary school boys. So old-looking Sophie now voiced by Jean Simmons runs off into the hills where she meets a hopping scarecrow she names Turniphead. By the end of the film, I had more questions than answers. Why is there a war? What part does Howl playin it?

'Castle' nothing to howl about

Perhaps his most famous work in the US is the everyone-likes-it-but-me Princess Mononoke, which earned tremendous critical acclaim while I spent half the movie confused and half of it bored. Howl-deep-voiced by Christian Bale-rides around in an elaborate moving castle, as the title indicates. Howl takes her in and he and his motley band of castle dwellers deal with war, witches, magic, and scariest of all, love. Trying to pick favorite parts out of movies this good is an impossibility.

That jumbled piece of architecture, that cacophony of hissing steam and creaking joints, with smoke billowing from it as it moves on its own That castle is home to the magnificent wizard Howl, infamous for both his magical prowess and for being a womanizer—or so the rumor goes in Sophie Hatter's small town.

There is a war raging during this time. Sophie has an uneventful life and is introduced as unsure of herself. On her way to visit her sister, she meets a mysterious wizard, Howl, who protects her from soldiers that were harassing her. Determined to break the curse, Sophie ventures to find a wizard who can restore her youth. She bargains with Califer by offering her cleaning and cooking skills in exchange for shelter as well as a deal in which Califer breaks the curse on Sophie if she breaks the curse that binds the fire demon and Howl, Califer agrees.

A young woman named Sophie lives a simple life running the hat shop her late father left behind. Thus the Witch of the Waste casts a spell on Sophie, aging her into a year old woman and unable to tell anyone of her curse. The setup is, for the most part, excellently done. Miyazaki has been outspoken about his pacifistic ways, so if he wanted to make an anti-war movie, then more power to him.
