These animated films are beloved all over the world—so for the Ghibli fans in Tokyo, where can you get your fix? The most obvious first port of call for any Studio Ghibli fan is the amazing Ghibli Museum. It requires a bit of advance planning to secure your tickets read the Tokyo Cheapo guide for the essential details on how to buy them , but entrance is a bargain at 1, yen and worth every penny. The museum has a wide array of preserved everyday buildings from the Edo period.

Be sure to watch Spirited Away before your visit, because Miyazaki visited often during his creation of the film, using the buildings as inspiration. On an outside wall of the Nippon TV Tower, overlooking a concourse of deceptively dull buildings between Shiodome and Shinbashi stations, lies a little-known treat for Miyazaki fans and all fans of clockwork things : the Nittele Giant Clock. The clock springs into life, with all sorts of beautiful moving parts, music, and magic.

Get there early to make sure you get a good viewing spot. It looks especially fun in the dark. Just outside Seiseki-Sakuragaoka Station you can find a charming little noticeboard with a map of the key locations from the film in Japanese. The station itself is of course a key location.

The steep, curving road that Shizuku climbs to find the antique shop is called Irohazaka dori. Miyazaki grew up around Sayama Hills, particularly Fuchi no Mori about 40 kilometers from central Tokyo, and the setting inspired the forest in My Neighbor Totoro.

In fact, the area has been officially nicknamed Totoro forest. Miyazaki himself has contributed both money and hands-on conservation efforts to preserve this beautiful forest on the borders of Tokyo and Saitama. And you never know: you might even encounter Miyazaki himself. Access : 30 minutes walk from Seibu-Kyujo station. Donguri Kyowakoku is a chain of shops dedicated to selling Studio Ghibli merchandise.

They have almost 40 branches around Japan. There are four Tokyo branches waiting to meet all your Ghibli shopping needs. Another store that has plenty of Ghibli merchandise is Kotobukiya in Akihabara. The ground floor has a large corner filled with Totoro themed goods. Some of the key sites are:.

The Ghibli lover’s guide to Tokyo

Post a Comment. I actually don't have pictures of the actual gift shop at the Ghibli Museum because it was very small and crowded with many people inside and there was barely any space for me to walk so forget about taking pictures. Plus people were always in my way whenever I was trying to look at what items to buy. I also got these 3 books from the book store they had at the museum and let me just say it was the best thing I bought because what the books contain is beyond anything that can be captured by my camera. It also includes some interviews with Miyazaki Hayao and very interesting trivia facts about the museum, how he came up with the design and concept, how it was built and the history and meaning behind it.

Tokyo With Kids: Totoro and Studio Ghibli Museum

studio ghibli museum shop

Great news for all fans of the legendary Studio Ghibli and the equally celebrated maestro Hayao Miyazaki. After some fear of the long period of closure of the museum due to COVID and the consequent lack of visitors that has put the survival of the museum itself in danger, things seem to be slightly better than a few months ago; it certainly cannot be said that the number of visitors is satisfactory at the moment also due to the prolonged period of State of Emergency that has involved the land of the Rising Sun far and wide , however, if it is not the people who take a flight and go to the museum to experience the magic of the Japanese animation studio then it will be the magic of the Studio Ghibli to go to them. Directly and comfortably in their homes. Academy Museum Store reveals exclusive merchandise and collaborations

When you walk along Kichijoji Avenue, in the shade of the tall green trees of Mitaka's Inokashira Park, you come upon a colorful building. Standing in front of a sign that says "Ghibli Museum, Mitaka", a very large Totoro welcomes you at the entrance. When you look through the portholes, soot-black Dust Bunnies are there as well. But this is not the real entrance. Totoro shows you where the real entrance is.

During my recent trip to Tokyo, I was finally able to visit the Studio Ghibli Museum in Mitaka - and to say it was great, is a huge understatement. You can enjoy a special showing of an early Ghibli short film, see how a Ghibli film is made, and take a picture with a life-size version of the robot solider from Castle in the Sky. But don't expect to make a spontaneous trip there. The number of visitors is limited per day, so you must do some serious planning! For more photographs of my recent trip to Japan, be sure to visit my homepage. Studio Ghibli tickets are known to be very hard to get and are usually sold out weeks in advance.

My husband and I have been avid Hayao Miyazaki famed Japanese animator and director fans before we had kids. They are such wonderful works of art unlike any other.
