This trend seems to show no signs of stopping at the moment, but it shouldn't mean that the medium of animation should be devalued compared to the live-action medium. In fact, rather than Disney doing live-action remakes of animated films, what if they tried their hand at doing animated remakes of some of their live-action films?

There are quite a few live-action entries from Disney that weren't the biggest successes, but perhaps shifting them into fully animated projects could allow them to thrive in ways that they couldn't before. Disney's adaptation, however, was set in the normal world, with Underdog being a regular dog that gains his powers before being adopted by a former cop and his son.

The film, therefore, felt more like a predictable, unfunny comedy where a dog helps a boy come out of his shell. While Disney is riding the superhero craze thanks to the MCU, Underdog could still bring a fun and fresh feel to the popular genre in a more faithful adaptation. A fully animated Underdog film that combines the anthropomorphic animals and sharp wit of Zootopia with the retro superhero feel of The Incredibles would be astounding in the right hands.

Calvin uncovers a plot by the king's corrupt right-hand-man, Lord Belasco, to marry King Arthur's daughter Sarah by force. Using his wits and experience from the future, Calvin manages to expose Belasco's plot and grows more confident, while also inspiring Arthur to be a better king.

The film is riddled with dated cliches from the '90s but is notable for featuring future A-listers Daniel Craig and Kate Winslet in supporting roles. A remake that's done in hand-drawn animation could bring a much grander scale and a modern sense of humor to the story.

A story about limitless potential really deserves to be told in the limitless medium of animation. An animated remake with a much less complicated story and a greater visual influence from the Tomorrowland park at Disneyland could feel futuristic in the best ways.

The same should go for his film franchise, but maybe a fully animated film should be the next route that Herbie should take. After films like Wall- E and Lightyear , Pixar has shown an ability to successfully bring their style to the sci-fi genre and having the animation studio's best artists and writers involved would make a new Mission to Mars film a trip worth taking.

Patrick Swayze starred as Pecos Bill alongside fellow folk heroes John Henry and Paul Bunyan respectively in Tall Tale: The Unbelievable Adventures of Pecos Bill , in which all three heroes come together to help a young farmer prevent his family's land from falling into the hands of a ruthless developer. The film is certainly charming, but it feels somewhat restrained by the live-action limitations of the time that it was made.

Perhaps Walt Disney Animation Studios--who have recently specialized in making films drawn from unique mythologies and cultures like Encanto and Moana-- could work their brand of magic on Tall Tale and make it a more unrestrained yet fun Western.

The Three Musketeers has been told on film countless times , including by Disney with its own stellar film adaptation. But aside from the direct-to-video film Mickey, Donald, Goofy: The Three Musketeers , Disney hasn't produced a fully animated take on the iconic Alexandre Dumas novel, though such an adaptation could be quite fun and reinvigorating.

A new animated film of the classic story could hew a little closer to the novel than Disney's last animated take on the take.

Disney's animated films have been able to walk the line of light-hearted fun with a mix of darker plot points, which this story could use. Add in the swashbuckling action and adventure and this animated film could be lots of fun. To say that John Carter was a flop for Disney would be a Mars-sized understatement. Not only were the reviews for the film mixed, but a disastrous marketing campaign resulted in it bombing catastrophically at the box office. If Disney were to give John Carter another shot on the big screen, then an animated reboot could be the way to pull it off.

The planet of Barsoom could feel grander in scale and more alive in an animated world where no over-the-top action set piece or weird alien creature would feel as restrained as they might be with a live-action budget. It was reported over a year ago that Bryce Dallas Howard was set to helm a remake of Disney's Flight of the Navigator , though there hasn't been any news since then. Whether or not Howard is still attached to direct, it might be best to make a new Flight of the Navigator entirely animated.

The story's sensibilities feel more in line with recent Disney animated hits like Big Hero 6 and Soul , in which ordinary characters are thrust into extraordinary situations that are infused with the right amount of zippy humor and heart simultaneously. A new Flight of the Navigator would feel more alive if done this way but could also build on the film's original plot and characters. Disney has attempted to remake their sci-fi film The Black Hole for years, but the studio has never seemed to find a solid path forward.

Perhaps making an animated remake could be the way to bring the story to life. Disney's animation teams seem to be on a sci-fi streak at the moment, with the release of Pixar's Toy Story spin-off Lightyear and the upcoming film Strange World from Walt Disney Animation Studios.

There's no doubt then that either studio could bring something special to the table for a Black Hole remake that improves on the original film in terms of scope, intelligence, charm, and sense of adventure. Read Next in movies.
